whats good for carrying a coat, basic tool kit, some food, pump, and few odds and sods?

I use a slightly bigger pack than the usual,its a breghaus freeflow 35ltr
It has a separate pocket for your hydro bladder,and i reckon it will take up to 3ltr,and has an elasticated through hole in the pack for the tube.
The freeflow is one of those arched designs that curves it away from your back.
It's big at 35ltr but i'd still give it 10/10.

No chance of sweaty back syndrome

Deuter packs (with the mesh system to keep your back away from the load) seem very nice - borrowed one in the past, but never been able to afford one. Otherwise, the 8l and 15l Karrimor packs seem good, think they're called the Re-Fuel
