[#4454587]

I haven't been for a night ride in a couple of years, and so my Ay-Ups have sat gathering dust. I just took them out again today though, with a view to using them once again, and I can't remember which is the helmet light and which is the bar-mounted light.

Is there a way I can tell?

Between the two lamps, the centre of one has sort of a hexagonal pattern in it, while the other is just clear. What does that tell me (if it made any sense)?

Cheers.

Hexagonal pattern is a diffuser (sort of), that one is the flood pattern and the clear one is the spot

Excellent. Thanks for that. But now you'll really have to pardon my ignorance: which does the spot go on the helmet or on the bars?

have a look on the ayup site it is there somewhere, i think on the upgrade page, but basically doesn't really matter, just personal preference as to whether you want a narrow beam on head or bike.

as an aside this is why i have a green one, the same colour as the road bike, and a silver one which is close to white which is the colour of my helmet.

Try both, use whichever you prefer. Though for a relativelylow powered light light like an older Ayup you'll probably want the spot on the head and the flood on the bars.

I always run the spot on the helmet so it's pointed at the spot I want to look at

The other light on the bars lights up the area in front of your wheel, and comes in handy for slow speed, steep bits.

Cheers. I found this on the Ay-Up site:

Q - Cross country setup - The V4 is easily our most popular kit. If you are riding tight, twisting single track, or long, fast fire roads or just want some extra light for your daily commute pick up a V4 with a NARROW light for your helmet & an INTERMEDIATE for your handle bars.

It looks like it is normally spot on top and flood on the bars, as Northwind and grievoustim have suggested. But I will give both a try.

Yup, my preference is narrow on the head as it's pointing where you are looking, wide on the bars for peripheral spread.

If they are the older Ay-ups, have a look on the site (seems to be down for now) for their upgrade program. Pretty reasonable price to change the head unit to the latest drivers - and even go +40% beyond that if you want, at expense of run time.
