I'm close to buying Avid Shorty Ultimates, but want to check out other options. I've come across Paul Components (I have a pair of Paul canti levers to fit) and Shimano CX-70, but I have no idea how they compare, and online reviews seem a bit mixed.
Do you really want cantis?
I had Pauls cantis & while they worked well, their mini V brakes work a world better.cantis
My £7 tektro mini-vs were better than the best cantis I've tried. But they're not quite as good for mud clearance (wasn't really an issue for me tbh, the frame and fork were the point of most restriction, but it could still make a difference I'm sure)
I had a cx commuter with canto barkes and tried lots of brakes including mini v's and avid ultimates. The ultimates were good but a bit fiddly, cx70's were the best of the lot and I'm still using them on my summer commuter.
Still pish in the wet though which is why I switched to a commuting bike with discs.
Go for the cx70's
I know how to set up canti brakes btw before anyone says canti's have amazing stopping power, you're doing something wrong.
Thanks - I may have to rethink things!
Very pleased with my Ultimates, an upgrade from cx 70s.
