[#763009]

Avid Juicy 5's approx 9 months old
LBS Bled them and complained they were not satisfied with the bleed
Today I bought Dot 5.1 (see other thread for boredom)
Bled brakes tonight x 2
Brakes flat again! No sign of leaking or anything!(Did wash calliper and brake with water tho' so obviously not conclusive!)
No sign of dirt/black in the fluid
Brakes haven't had a lot of abuse to be fair

HELP!

Spotted this on Bike Radar (Posted AUG 08)

Had brake fluid leaks on three sets (six levers). This is caused by Avid not coating the inside of the master cylinder alloy top caps. This causes the untreated alloy to corrode / erode and allows fluid to leak past the rubber seal. The replacement top caps are coated so should not be a problem in the future. Avid not interested in supplying these under warranty so it costs a tenner a side which is poor customer service in my book.

Thanks
TS

I would guess at there is still air in there somewhere if they are both flat.
Happened to me the first couple of times i did mine.

I would try bleeding again and be absolutely paranoid about bubbles and see if that helps before shelling out on replacement top caps if you can't see any leaks.

When you bleed the caliper you really need to pump the syringe a lot. even when you think you've finished give it another couple of tries. I've bled mine twice - and they came pre bled - and they finally feel ok.

On another related point my Juicy 5 back brake master cylinder top cap seemed to be blowing bubbles yesterday. WTF? should there be an air hole there?

hugo rune - i was surprised to see that on my juicy 7's last night when i was sorting the pistons out (i find they go very sticky very quickly) pumping the pistons out and pushing them back in seemed to cause a good bit of fluid to ooze out of that hole. i assume it's there for a reason! Thermal expansion as a guess - it's probably just a slit which closes up naturally, but when fluid expands and when the lever is in the neutral position, excess can ooze out. just a guess though.

What do you mean by "brakes 'flat' again"?

I bled mine a while ago & followed the Youtube Avid video. Search for juicy brake bleed or something.

I take it you have the Avid kit? And did you degas the fluid before you used it? I was amazed by the amount of air that was residing in the fluid. Also, the part in the vid where they connect the syringe & then pull on it repeatedly before pushing (or something similar) I did that loads.
If anything my brakes ended up a bit overfull.

If it was fluid leaking past the top caps, you should be able to notice an oily residue around them? Particularly if it's enough loss to make the brakes go from OK to not OK?

check the rubber reservoir under the top cap very carefully - I had one split ever so slightly a while back and it had to be replaced.

I found submersion of the whole brake system let me see exactly where the leak is.

Get the manual, and follow the very long and repetitive bleed process to the letter. Works perfect every time for me.

when youve finished bleeding em, zip tie (or other means) the levers back to the bars and leave overnight. The compression should force any remaining air out of the lines-its an old MX trick.

Always been successful in bleeding all my other Avids following to the letter - just not this time.

MC - Will do
