Never used cable discs before and just wondered if they needed the extra cable pull of V type levers or whether they will work with canti brake levers?

You really need the v brake levers - they will work just with canti levers but not properly -

Road ones = road levers
Mtb ones = mtb style levers
Or you can use something like travel agents from problem solvers

You can use road bb-7s with canti levers. Shorter cable pull than the v-brake lever ones.
