So, road bike, 17.12 mile ride which I did in 58 mins & some seconds. Would you say that was reasonable or do I need to work on it? Wouldn't say I was going flat out but had a sweat on. I'm not really a person who 'trains' as such but I just like to keep my fitness level up (a bit)
You may slag me off if you wish.
Depends on what you are trying to achieve.
For me, 17 miles is almost a sprint, so I would be aiming to ride faster.17-18 mph is a decent speed for a longer ride.
How much climbing in that? TBH its a bit variable unless your taking into account the route / wind / conditions etc.
As a general average thats 17.3 ish? Not bad, now try doing a 100k and averaging it ๐ FWIW I've just completed my first winter training & ride 3 x per week and am averaging 18.2 over 70k, 18.7 over 50k on a calm sunny day, with about 800m of ascent / descent.
Its OK for a casual rider.
Lots of whippets on here though.

Should set up a stw strava club and see what people ACTUALLY average!
Doubt many would sign up though!
Not really trying to achieve a lot I suppose, just wondering if I was reasonably reasonable! Did pass 3 'casual' looking guys though.
Not much climbing, just some rises. Fairly calm evening too.
Ahh well, must try harder!
Climbing will affect it hugely - I usually average 16mph around Dartmoor ๐
I average around 13.5 mph ๐ฏ

There's one already, hard to believe, eh?
Should set up a stw strava club
There is one.
I would say it was fairly quick myself. Not race pace by any means but a decent speed
TJ, I love you.

Blimey, so there is!
You can also join the monthly STW Endomondo road challenge
TBH, it's up to you, as long as you enjoyed it it OK.
I did 71 on Sunday with an ave of 19.2. When I'm racing 50/60 miles my ave is around 27/28mph.
Remember it all about enjoying your riding but riding the road is very different than riding your MTB.

that's how far you ride to meet people to go for a ride. ๐

I don't doubt ๐

Well if you just want to keep your fitness up then thats fine. Go all out next time, see how quick you can do it?
Jambo + 1
*make mental note to ride harder*

Well I normally travel 35 miles plus to meet my mate for a ride actually. Durr ๐

I second the ๐ฏ . VERY impressive speed. Kristian House from Rapha Condor averaged around that on what looks like a time trial over 55km so kudos. Tony Martin managed about 29mph on the TdF final time trial over 43km too.
So probably worth calling British Cycling ASAP as it looks like you're up with our best.
Yeh, but a time trialist isnt sitting behind someone in a bunch.
Anything over 20mph average is pretty good, and if you can average 15mph for 4 hrs then thats pretty good too.
To get any better you really have to be training hard, and have a lower BMI than me thats for sure!!!!!
Not bad op.
As for you druid...I thought you raced? ๐
Holy Moley Rochey, can I have your autograph?

I would race Al, but they'd all pass me when I stop for ice-cream.

PMSL, owned!!!
I wish i was racing in 1903, i might have had a chance!!!
Rule of thumb if it's flat 25 miles should take an hour, if it's hilly it should 70 mins
Andy Wilkinson, who is a local to these parts, averaged 25.2mph....but that was for 12HOURS!!! (thats 302.4miles btw ๐ฏ ).
It's unfathomable.
@Rorschanch - Wilko is a little bit mad ๐
@Joxter-Bollocks,Wilko is loads mad! (and a really nice bloke/legend) ๐
Great fun Rochey. 19.2 over 72m but up to 27/8 for 50-60? Do you stop for a long cup of tea at mile 61?

Try setting your computer to the correct wheel size.......
He's a cyborg I reckon ๐
Geraint Thomas averaged 35.5mph earlier today, so I reckon your 17mph must be a bit lame ๐

Mebbe, but he's not 55 yrs old & at least 2 st overweight like me!
Wilko is a cyborg sent back through time to own people, on a bike with a triple ,after riding to and from where ever the event is ,whilst trying not to break sweat.

I knew a lad like that, rode from York to Newcastle, did the Great North run then rode back to York.
Not massively fit but massively crackers!

Can't remember who it was (someone reasonably well known in enduro MTBing circles) who rode from Liverpool to Catton Park, took the panniers off his bike, rode the 6hr race solo (really rather fast) and then rode back to Liverpool. ๐ฏ
I've just averaged 26.5mph around Tameside for 50 mins. It was bloody hard work!
it`s just about ok if you only ride in 20 mph zones ๐
Lol, guys, all I'm talking about is a road race over 50/60 miles with a high ave, road racing is fast.
Crazylegs-I think that was Wilko aswell ๐ฏ
I'm pretty sure it was on his 700c 'hybrid' too........
