Having twice failed to unclip in the 5:10's I was wearing last night due to the recessed cleat location I'm looking for an SPD shoe with an open sole design (so more more of a traditional XC shoe than a trainer one).

So something with no perforations and a little padding but not a full winter boot.

I wear Spcialized SPD XC shoes in the summer but get cold toes so switched to the 5:10's as they're warmer (I normally only wear them for pootling to the shops in as you can walk round when you get there). Rode them last night for a proper ride and just couldn;t get them to release quick enough - I think it may be the depth fo the pocket and I could pack the cleat out but they leak like sieves in the wet so I was looking form soemthign between a lightweight xc shoe and my full winter boot.

NorthWave Scream 2 maybe? Just got a pair - they look like you're wearing Overshoes.

I’ve had northwave Celsius for a few year and never had any bother uncliping with shimano spds.  They are 100% water proof and keep you warm to about -10.    U still put sealskin socks on as you can get water running down ya legs into them.

Giro Alpinduro? Very comfy, have a kinda retro walking boot vibe to them.

Not full on winter boots, but great for autumn and spring weather.

I picked up some northwave raptor gtx shoes over Christmas, they did well in some horrible mud earlier this year. Warm and waterproof but not the arctic version so not full on winter boots.
