I have a set of the cheap Shimano RS10's (I think the wheelset was £80-90 new) and was also very pleasantly surprised by those. I only bought them to use the rear as a turbo trainer wheel but ended up running them on my wife's bike for a while as they were much lighter than the ones as well as having better bearings and being much better looking. Supposed to be 1845g which, while not light, isn't bad for that sort of cash.
When you say don't last long, how long are we talking?
I got a couple of pairs around May last year I think. One pair I rode most days, about 10 hrs a week until about October. There's probably a little life still left in them. Not too bad really, though not as durable as say a GP4000.

Fantastic wheels for the price, but keep an eye on the rims, they are prone to cracking round the nipples.

Will do - they're back to just turbo use now anyway as SWMBO's bike has inherited by old Planet-X Model-B's.
For £500, a nice set of handbuilts at about the 1600g mark, plus latex tubes and some nice Vittoria GX Corsas.
Skinwalls, you say...

Note they are a nightmare to keep clean and Vittoria now sell grey (oil-coloured) sidewall variants for a reason - I run both.
Can't. Get. Past. Seatpost.....
Urgh, way to ruin the mood.
I know. Fugly, isn't it? Works though, and I can't see it while I'm on it. 🙂

Do you get requests on club runs to take the rear guard off so people behind are sufficiently blinded by mud not to see it?
(I jest, they're meant to be mega).
Those Veloflex Open Corsas are things of beauty; smooth riding especially with latex inners and grippy thanks to the soft compound and file pattern tread. Okay they are fragile but I don't commute and I'm happy to exchange fragility for a ride of that quality. The parent Vittorias have the same nice ride and great grip.
Nice tyres those Veloflex. Corsa not that quick unfortunately (test). Think those up there are Masters though.
They are indeed Masters. They ride sooooo well, grippy, comfortable, feel faster, look pimp, what more could you want?
If you aren'the sure what you want, then a wheelbuilder should be able to chat through your riding and needs to suggest something suitable.
I'very got a set of heavy wheels that I love. My singlespeed commuter runs some sealed bearing hubs from some hip London shop with 36 spokes on H Son Archetype rims. They are bombproof and just the ticket for finding potholes on a dark December morning.
My road bike has some Superstar hubs with Pacenti SL23 rims and they have carried my 90kg for a couple of years now with no problems. Light, wide and true.
After years with Hope I am a DT hubs fan now and would recommend some laced to what ever rims and number of spokes fits your dreams.
