Indeed.

I've got my first Assos bit of kit now- some leg warmers. First ride review is that they're crap- they just slip down and aren't any more comfortable or special feeling than normal warmers.

£260??

When I was buying some bib shorts I looked at their stuff, and it was around £130ish. How do you add on another £130 to lengthen the legs a bit??

SpokesCycles, never heard of that happening with leg warmers, and I've never had any problems with my cheapy spesh ones that I got free. I'd send them back, they sound awful.

Perhaps if they slip then they simply don't fit you.

Gore leg warmers stay in place ... provided they are placed high enough up, as it were. And they're men's!

On a serious note, Asos is supposed to be the best and if I were a roadie doing serious miles, then it's a given that one would invest in some seriously top notch tights. BUT not that much!

Would they last for the next 20 years? Does the chamois never wear out/compress?

Rootes- they're a perfect fit elsewhere but it's like the upper gripper isn't good enough. I'll stick with my old school adidas ones I reckon.

Assos has never been cheap, but the real problem is the fact that the pound has collapsed against the swiss franc and sent prices through the roof.

Go back to October 08 and the exchange rate was 2.4chf to the pounds it is now 1.6chf to the pound.

Lots of other good bibs out there. I wasn't too impressed with the F1 Mille bibs I bought & returned them. Top end Pearl Izumis are nice, Sugoi RS, Giordana meant to be good though I haven't tried the latter.

Rapha bib tights (oops sorry, Deep Winter tights) £220. 😯

mrmo - point taken.

So, if you don't want to pay the fancy prices of Assos and Rapha, are there any other 'good quality' brands out there?

Just really curious about this now.

before i did a mega long road ride, i thought i'd 'treat' myself to some assos shorts.

after several thousand miles in them, i can confirm they are nothing special, i bought some endura bib-knickers for half the price that are MUCH nicer in every respect (fit, chamois, construction)

assos stuff is ok, but if it was half the price it would still be a total rip-off

I wear my Assos leg warmers a lot, and they stay put, much more than any others I've tried I have to say. I really like the way the gripper is only on the back, much more comfy.

I also have some of the Roubaix tights, which I love, although they've more or less worn through they've done about 7 years of winter riding, road and off road. They were only about £105 when I bought them, and I got them trade. I don't think I can bring myself to spend the £200 or so they are now, which is a real shame. But the quality on their shorts isn't as good as it was either, hopefully the tights etc haven't gone the same way.

Rapha bibshorts and 3/4 bibshorts are fantastic - worth every penny. the 3/4 bibshorts have a Roubaix/fleecy lining - plenty warm enough for the winter/nightriding.

See I've never had a Lusso product I've liked, their arm, leg warmers and their tights are crap IMO, just don't fit, slip and aren't warm!

I'm still using assos biblongs I bought in 1998. They were about £120 then. Remarkably good value I reckon. Currently the prices are a bit eyewatering, but then I just like to buy decent quality stuff once. Their repair service is great too - and they put in a box of Swiss chocs to make you doubly happy.
Now all I have to do is see if I've managed to kill my new Argon 18 frame this afternoon.

if you can still get some, try the Aldi ones. for the price of them, they are pretty good and you won't use naughty words when you put little holes in them (the idea of wearing assos tights and mountain biking seems frankly bonkers)

Keep an eye on Flebay for end of season shop sales. It is expensive, but it's materials and tayloring is uber nice. I've tried a few of the 'up there' brands and there's just a certain je ne sais quoi to Assos. But I have to agree that £200+ is just madness imo.

He stands well back, awaiting the ill-taylored Aldi Peloton to arrive 😛

The Gore stuff is well fitting, not too expensive. I found it a better fit than Giordana.

That's it I'm out of here............................

£340 for a carbon troy lee that'll bounce down a mountain and need replacing? Top end kit in cycling is generally extortionate, you gotta love it.

I don't buy or use (er, can't afford) Assos stuff... but I would urge everbody who can to continue doing so - in the hope that Assos will continue to employ the services of that divine raven-haired girl who models for 'em. 😳

trickydisco - thanks for that link, their stuff looks amazing. Normally I loathe anything remotely roadie stylee but those 'Signature' tops are gorgeous. 8)

psling - I resemble a Gore sponsored rider! Always happy with their quality, apart from anything padded.

Lots of interesting replies and ideas too. 🙂 I've not got a problem paying for quality but, seriously, £259??

Amen to that brother.

C_G how much was that carbon fibre bike of yours? Surely your well formed and pert derrier deserves only the best? 😛

trickydisco - good link apart from graphic scrotum information. 😯

Don't wear lycra myself, even when I had a road bike it was baggies and a Camelbak. 🙄 But am so tempted with that Signature top, love that colour block.

Munque-chick - yes, it's a lot for a jersey but it's merino. A decent merino base layer such as Icebreaker would cost £60.

But don't understand how merino can be used as a jersey, does this mean it's heavier than a base layer weight?

Still like that colour block design though! Can imagine that becoming a classic in the same vein as the Paul Smith stripes.

I've just got some Descente 3/4s and the quality is really nice. Got some of the mid range (£70ish) Gore bib shorts and they're excellent. For value the dhb stuff from wiggle can't really be beaten, i've got the bib shorts and winter longs and no complaints with either.

The main reason they cost so much is that they are actually made in Switzerland and not in a sweatshop in India or Indonesia where the workers earn one dollar per week and have to work 60+ hours a week (think about why Aldi and Lidl clothes are so cheap).

I have a pair of the F1's and I have to say they are the comfiest pair of shorts I have ever owned and I save them only for racing as they don't last any longer than any other shorts (as proved by the previous pair I had). But even after all that I would have say that I doubt if I would buy another pair now after the new price hikes and the fact that the other top brands have played catch up in the quality of the chamois etc.

No exactly true.

The top end stuff is made in Switzerland but the rest is made other European countries such as Slovenia.

Quality pays, it's that simple. I'm unsure I'd ever pay £260 for bibs but £90 for a merino jersey - why not? I have one from Aldi, it's fine but nowhere near as nice as Ground Effect let alone Icebreaker. And the black one with the blocky pattern is going to come my way, hopefully soon.
C_G, why would you move away from Gore?

Update on where the stuff is made.

Just looked on the box of my F1.13 S5 bib shorts, these are the top of the range Assos bibs, and they are made in Bulgaria.

FOr bib shorts the chamois are manufactured by an external company and so is the fabric.

When i was looking I went for DHB as the fabrics and chamois were the same. Think the top end ones were £90 and they are superb.
