Anyone know of any decent trails or an offroad loop that can be done from Ashburton?
It is good place to live as there's so much within a 15min drive, however it doesn't seem there's much you can do if you have a spare hour and don't want to use the roads.
Anyway, some pics from a quick explore around some of the woods to the North of Ashburton.
And a ridiculously OTT HDR image
Nice pics! I have same issue, lots of trails but generally require abit of climbing etc to find anything decent. I did ask in big peaks but they were as helpful as a chocolate fire guard! ๐
Yeah, I did enquire to, they said I should come along to their Thursday evening ride, I asked where it was starting... Chudleigh... great.
Hembury through to RDCP? Used to be one of my favourite areas.
Used to be better before it was Big Peaks, when it was the Mountain Bike Centre.
had a superb ride up the road above widdie today.
Nice shots, and nice bike too!
It's true, there's not much off road action to be had out the door from Ashburton but there are some good possibilities out of Buckfast (maybe not an hour). There's so much great riding on the moor within 1/2 hour drive though, you can't complain! As for the Thursday night ride linked to Big Peaks, the ride has been going a few years now and enjoys the participation of guys who've lived and breathed their Dartmoor riding for years. I'm really missing it at the moment as I've not been able to get out for weeks (Baby/work). If you want to experience some of the best riding in the area, then I recommend that you hook up with them. Someone might even be able to give you a lift if you don't have wheels... they're a really friendly bunch.
As for Big Peaks themselves, Pete is the one I'd talk to about MTB stuff in the area, as he rides a lot.
know how you feel. live there too. I tend to use the climb up on to the moor as a bit of fitness training and then do a loop that links up things like bonehill and then up to hameldown or the other way to houndtor woods. I have figured a way to get back to Ahburton that's almost all off road from hay tor, which is pretty cool.
it's been so wet recently that I've just gone on the road bike for 2 or 3 hour blast.
not tried the big peaks group rides, might give it a go though.
Give the Big Peaks Thurs ride another go. They change location every week as far as I know. Did an awesome ride with them round Hembury Woods. Cool bunch too. Pete is your man there.
