[#2016343]

After something to replace my pinch happy nevegals. CRC have some deals on WTB exiwolfs or prowler mx. Thing is i tend to see most people just opt for Maxxis/Continental these days (verticals probably being my fave tyre ever).. so is anyone using WTB treads these days or have they had their day...

I've got a soft spot for WTB and looked at the Prowlers a while ago, but feedback from riders in the US was mixed to say the least so I gave them a miss.

I bought a set of WTB Mutano Raptors and there is nowt wrong with them. As good as the panaracers and maxxis ignitors I've ran before. DNA compound supposedly is hard wearing too.

As with alot of things mtb, a lot of faith is put in a name. Schwalbe seem to be big right now and I'm pretty sure 75% of people that buy their tires, do so, because they like the look of a funky name (fast fred, smart sam et al) in big white lettering going round on their rims 😀

Is feedback from the USA really relevant to everyday UK riding conditions?

weirwolf lt nice when it's dry

weirwolf std, bit scary in the mud but good on soft soil etc

judging by recent discounting, I wonder if a new range or rubber is coming up soon

I've been using WTB tyres for years, the Weirwolf being my favourite.
Never had any problems and would consistently buy them, especially if there was good discounts.

dna compound is impressively hard wearing for the grip
i have an old weirwolf that ive abused for years and the tread is still great even if there is a big split in the sidewall

I have some Dissent DH tyres that won't wear out or die. They are excellent in the dry.

too expensive at £40 a tyre but in the sale they are reasonable value

Weirwolf and Motoraptor here for years in different sizes. Can't fault them and the Prowler looks as though it would work well with a Weirwolf up front. I have a Weirwolf with a Michelin rear and it is great and the weight isn't too bad considering the size.

I've had mutanoraptors and they were ace.
I had some nanoraptors too which were really fast rolling - great for commuting but without the commuter look...

WTB were quite late to the tubless game though, wasn't there an interview in Singletrack with the main guy (Dave Weir?)

Their xc tyres are great, the Nanoraptor and Vulpine make a great fast xc front and rear combo. I've used the combo at thr HONC for thr last two years, I currently have the Vulpine on the rear with a Maxxis Aspen up front on my SS.

My 29er MotoRaptors stuck like glue in the peak. They did feel like peeling velcro on any grass, but wet rocks n mud were ace. The 29er Wierwolf LT's were a fabulous, supple summer tyre as well, speed and reasonable grip.

Just fitted some WTB tyres from said CRC sale - Stout 2.3 folding on front and a Prowler XT 2.3 folding on the back...........so 2 rides later:

The Prowler is a little draggy on tarmac and fire road uphills, but as far as traction goes it is amazing - really holds the trail well, and no wiping out even on greasy roots. Very stable when heading downwards, and a nice large carcass that soaks up the bumps.

The Stout is probably the most predictable front tyre I've used - no sudden washing out in corners, holds really well on gravel and greasy roots. Really pushed it on the off-piste stuff up on Haldon tonight, and never once felt out of control.
