Yeah, snowflake lacing is strong, and looks good.

I'm the seller. i think they're worth at least 60 quid, but I've advertised them at 30. If someone buys them for £30, I'll probably string him along for a bit then just ignore him.

Well, I am led to believe it is quite strong... A guy I ride
bmx with has his laced like that, and says it's because it builds a stiff and strong wheel. It's just difficult to build... He certainly abuses his anyway...

I'd have thought it'd be weaker as it's introducing stresses into the spoke where it's not designed to take them?

They do look nice though

Those XT "apple core" hubs were rotten!

Snowflake wheels are STIFF and this makes them feel as if they are strong, but it ain't necessarily so.

If you break a spoke they are a massive PITA to fix. Especially if they have been soldered.

I have to agree: they do look massively cool.

IMHE snowflakes are quite strong, but actually have a fell of some 'give' when riding. IE, they could be considered a compliant feeling wheel.

I had some, and they felt great to ride, but every hard landing they went out just a little bit. easy to true-up, but didn't stay true for long.

I reckon, avoid them. 'specially old ones that have been tweaked to f*ck.

😆 - you lot can't even agree what placebo effect it is you're supposed to be feeling!

Ah, the good old 3rd party says so proof.

I have a Merlin build snowflake front wheel on the bike that is now my commuter but before that was my everyday mountain bike
Been going solid now for over 15 years, only needed a slight true twice
The rims are pretty much worn through now though which is a real shame

5lab, does the OP have your permission to reproduce your photo? thats got to be worth an extra tenner 😉

No, they are both 'stiff' and 'compliant', just like a niche Reynolds 853 tubing singlespeed built in a shed 😆

maybe I should dig my old XT on ATEC snowflakes out the loft, not sure I like to ride on them as there +20 years old, but great to hanging on the garage wall. They 'did' look good... once.
