Without wanting to sound dissmissive - They're £55, and you get what you pay for. What exactly can you expect for that kind of money?

Most likely to be that cheap cos they look fairly old stock - canti bosses and for 80-100mm forks.

Aside from that they're probably about comparable to Merlin's own brand frames or any other low-ish cost hardtail.

Wouldn't have thought there's anything much wrong with them if you just want to build up a cheap hardtail

So in all fairness they are ok, but riding a 7005 alu frame all day is not good and go for a steel frame like a 456

No reason why you couldn't use a 7005 frame all day. A 456 is a very different (and much better) frame than the Handsome Dog. Probably about 3 time better, for 3 times the cost.

The Handsome Dog really is a bottom of the range budget item. Not bad for hanging spare parts off/commuting/beginner etc etc etc, but not much more.

If you're 'proper' mountain biking, especially all day rides, you'll benefit massively from spending a bit more. The quality and design are just as/more important than the material though, so don't discount all aluminium frames.

The 456 certainly springs to mind. I'd be tempted to trawl eBay/classifieds for a 'pre-loved' bargin at that price. Like this.

you could do a lot worse than a 456.. i had a summer season for a while.. it always surprised me how much fun the thing was to ride.. It always put a smile on my face.. and for just over a 100 bucks you cant go wrong

In that sort of bargain price bracket have a look at Dirty Jo bikes (although website is down)

Surely the 456 is not the only other option. Frames sell on here and ebay for <100 a pop day in day out. 'Buy S/H' is very good advice.

As a quick example, if you're quite tall, I'd sell you the frame from one of these in 21" for £40! (no really I would)

I recently sold a Merlin Malt 2 frame for £50 for example as well. Shop around 🙂

If you're short, I would recommend DMR frames. They go for cheap 2nd hand and are really good. Bloody love my 16" trailstar. A bit short for steeper climbs but it's great on the descents and jumps 😀

I have the XC03, originally built up for commuting:

But I've stuck some Reba's on it and its a pretty good ride, done 4 hours over Swinley recently and all was good. Previous frame was a 456, found it too heavy, although had Pikes etc...

EDIT:
Picture with Reba's and in XC mode:

I'll probably end up swapping it for something, just not sure what yet??? but its a capable stop gap frame.

That's the sort of price range for a 2nd hand Cotic Soul.

I thought about getting one. I think the quality will be absolutely fine and you'll have no problems riding it all day. However, the problem is finding out information on the geometry to make sure you get the right size.

I asked all-terrain-cycles but didn't get very helpful responses 🙁

i got a 2nd hand Pinnacle frame in the end, as i only wanted something for commuting.
