Hi,
Bit of a rookie question - I broke the LH gear shifter (Shimano Alivio SL-M430) on my mtb and so need to buy a new one - will I have to worry about compatibility or can I just get whatever?

Front mechs, pretty much anything will work!
Rear mechs can be tricky:
Basically, as long as you get another Shimano one that shifts the same number of gears, you'll be fine 🙂
SRAM shifters with numbers (X7, X9 etc) won't work with a Shimano rear mech, but ones with names (Attack) will IIRC
