I'd like to replace my 26 inch bikes tbh. Not because of the wheels, just because I like new shinies. But I think what'll happen is I sell one, and the other one becomes the Dustbin of 26 and I end up keeping it going for about 40 years

my steel bike has a headtube of 1' 1/8" and a seat tube is 27.2.

I tried the updated fat headtube/seatube model and the added stiffness meant the ride was worse, less involving and harsher.

I'd have to go custom to replace it, because modern advances say I need stiffness and big wheels.

I'm no luddite: my bars are 780, stem 60mm with 140mm forks and a dropper post.

Bigrich - Similar set up to yours. Which dropper do you use ?

Not so concerned about the wheel size as 26 does me fine on both bikes. I also can't justify the costs of upgrading to 650b for what may only be marginal differences. I'm told 29 is faster as mates have taken the plunge but zero interest here for the time being.

However the lack of a 27.2 dropper due to limited options is a faff.

My 29 doesn't feel particularly fast, I must say. Wheels are a tad lardy at about 1800g the set though, perhaps that's it. My old 26 race bike is much quicker.

I'm confused.

Do we think that 650b's a waste of time because it's so close to 26" as to make no difference or that 650b's rubbish because it makes the bike worse round tight corners and not as much fun so disproving the 'makes no difference' line of defense?

I'm still enjoying my 2009/ 26" wheeled / 1 1/8" head tubed/ 27.2 seat tubed/ 9mm qr'd Five. Seems fine to me! I have gone 1x10 from 3x9 though.

Even if I did want to change it, I'd never be able to afford a bike of comparable quality/spec since having kids...

Your insurance company paid out, therefore if its now recovered that particular piece of tripe is not actually yours to do anything with

True but I did the correct thing in letting them know, I purchased the bike back from them.

So OP you bought back your 26" bike?
And your asking who buys 26" bikes??

Yes, at the time I hadn't ridden my new variety of sized wheels much,
It was custom built by my own hands,
I essentially purchased a £2k bike for £60,
I would have bought it back even if it had 10" wheels!

Don't worry, I'm keeping the bike!

Rode my 26" 2013 Five three times last week/weekend, and I can honestly say that at the end of each ride I just thought 'f*ck me, that was mint'. If it got nicked tomorrow I'd buy the same bike in 650b, but I wouldn't expect it to be any more fun - just different, and a bit more future-proof.
