I need to replace an old 3x7 front derailleur, can i use a 3x10 onein it's place?

can be had for not very much money, and it kind of future proofs things... i'd be using the old 3x7 shifter.

or do i buy a 3x7 specific derailleur?

best to get one for the right size chainrins.

A shimano 3x10 might be designed for 24-32-42 so is slightly different to the older 3x9 22-32-44. It will work but might not be quite as crisp.

Also need to check the pull ratio but I do know that shimano 9 and 10 speed are the same.

I've used a 9 speed front mech for a 3x8 setup. It worked fine. But I have read that each size is designed for the relevant chain width.

7 and 8 speed chains were the same width, but as mentioned above, will work best if matched to the right chainring profile.

same with 9 speed.

however, in practice you could use a 9 speed with a 7 speed chain without too much hassle, maybe have to cope with a little chain rub on the extremes of chain line (top or bottom of the cassette).

Don't forget to check if it's top or bottom pull and the mounting type.

Cable routing can also be a PITA sometimes, but you usually only find that out once it's bolted to the bike!
