I need a new front tyre for smoother trail riding, I've had a few scary borderline faceplant moments sliding the front end through corners.
I'm looking for something that rolls nearly as fast as the Ardent but has more aggressive side knobs. Would something like a Specialized Slaughter, Mavic Roam or a Rock Razor give me as much straight line braking grip as a 2.2 Ardent?
The best combo I had was an ardent on the rear and an advantage on the front. They were 2.4s though so massive for my purposes. I changed them for on one smorgasbords and they're really poor in comparison. Would like to go back to the maxxis combo but a little skinnier.
Bontrager XR4 here, having had a few sliddddddderrrrrrrrry moments here on the mud on Ardents. They do the much better grip for not much extra drag trick well. Nice and supple still as well. They come up huuuuuge.
Advantage isn't available in 650b ๐
Don't care for mud performance, proper tyres will come out for that.
Ardents grip OK but you have to lean them a long way on every turn - if you're cornering on the bald strip they're ded scary ! (mine went onto the back only)
Yeah, they're still not that great when lent fully over though.
I'd really like Ardent center knobs with HR2 or Minion side knobs as a front tyre for shallow trails. Unless I'm mistaken, there aren't really any tyres on the market that fit exactly what I am looking for.
The Bonty XR4 seems a decent shout, cheers.
I second learning to really edge Ardents to get more grip. Scary at first...
Ardent 2.4? Considerably knobblier than the 2.2 isn't it?
Isn't there a new minion coming with faster rolling centre knobs?
Conti xking black chilli.
i have used the xr4 at both ends for years great tyre use it all year round.
No idea about 650b but ... I use a ardent 2.25 rear, Beaver 2.25 front/
Winter = 2xBeaver
yes but think no knobs, its a semi slick!Isn't there a new minion coming with faster rolling centre knobs?
Id check out the Ardent 2.4 as its a lot more aggressive than the 2.25, and also consider the WTB Trail boss in 2.4. It corners better in more situations that the Ardent IMHO. Don't let its looks fool you - its one hell of a tyre. Not light in the tough high grip format (which is what I would choose), but for a fast rolling tyre it holds on in the corners waaaaaay better than it looks like it will, and the tough 2.4 can be run silly low pressures too.
ardent rear, HRII 3c front are my summer combo.
I'm about to ditch the HRII for winter (and probably for summer) great when it's great but on hardpack and rock where the side knobs can't dig I just don't like it. Think I'm heading back to the minion if I can find a 26" one...
