The rivers around here rise quickly with the hill run off and then drain just as quickly when the rain has stopped.

Yeh, it’s a few hundred metres from the gauge linked to and the Swale is much wider so it won’t be rising so dramatically.

It’ll be fine...

🤭😂

OK. There's another gauge on the Swale up at Keld and that hasn't risen so it's likely that it's Arkle Beck causing the problem. Looks very localised, unfortunately too local for Ard Rock ATM.

Unless there was sustained rainfall across the Upper Swale catchment then you wouldn't expect problems in the main river at that point. Arkle Beck should start falling soon, hopefully.

This is when you want a white water canoeist or access to a white water guidebook. You need info along the lines of "rises in X hours after heavy rain and falls Y hours later". When I lived in N. Wales a friend "paddled" some what appeared to be very unremarkable streams that only came into condition for maybe an hour following a downpour.

I was offered work sandbagging, I politely declined.

Ard Moors 2017 would suggest it'll go ahead whatever the conditions.

I'm not so sure now. The water should go but the road damage left behind might make access difficult.

Even if the rain does stop, surely the camping field will turn into a bog once a few cars drive across it.... unless they have a fleet of 4x4's to get everyone moving?

Does anyone have any contact with the ard rock guys? See what their vibe is?

surely they're going to have to cancel - they're already short of camping space (there isn't any more ground to use if any of the campsites are flooded) and they're going to be sodden. i'd be amazed if you could get cars into them, let alone out.

I'm obviously gutted, but it's just a mtb event - feel so bad for the people affected by the flash flooding.

Dear friends,
We are heartbroken to tell you that the 2019 Ard Rock enduro is cancelled. Flash flooding in the Swaledale valley has flooded roads, homes, land and submerged the Ard Rock site. Right now we are doing everything in our power to ensure our team on the ground is safe, and we can support all those who need help. The rainfall and situation is unprecedented in this area. Access to the area is blocked by emergency services from all roads. Please do not travel.
Please allow us some time to ensure everyone is safe before we update you with all required details and FAQ’s.
Rest assured that none of our racers, participants or partners will be out of pocket. If you are a catering/services vendor, or brand we will be in contact shortly. We will update you via video when we know everyone is safe.
Thank you for your understanding.
With heavy hearts,
Joe and the whole team at Ard Rock.

😥

The English summer strikes again. Two major MTB events cancelled this year due to rain! Been looking forward to this weekend for months! That is some serious rain though

Hope everyone’s ok and thoughts are with everyone up there but Yep gutted!
We were up there this time last week getting some miles in and saying ”hope it’s not this hot on the day”. The ground was very dry.
If it’s cancelled and not rescheduled it’d be good if the entries can just roll over to next year?
Good luck to all involved
Cheers
Steve

I feel so bad for them, the amount of effort required to set it up only for freak weather to ruin it.

Hope the locals are all safe too, those videos look terrifying.

There's been a suggestion of donating refunds for recovery of the area. Given how much we invade the village, could be good to help out.

Utterly pants news.

It's a really big thing to get this many people in the dale, a proper showcase for an area often overlooked.

Amongst other areas in the Dales The Dales Centre and the Ardrock organisers have just been on bbc news.
Very sad for the area.
