I am pretty set on taking 2 bikes up to Ard Rock. Plan was to use my hardtail for the marathon on the Saturday then my full sus for the enduro on the Sunday.
Also if a major mechanical was to happen (I know it’s probably not likely) on the Saturday, i can still ride on the Sunday.
How safe would they be chained together to the roof of my car?
Have there even been any bikes stolen? Could possibly fit one in the car with wheels off overnight and one in tent, but both car and tent are small and as our little daughter is coming, bike in tent is not ideal.
Bikes have always been chained to the cars overnight (wheel, towbar, etc). There are enough shops/etc to not have to warrant needing two bikes.
I would put it in the car, not on the car.
When you say "chained to the roof" what do you actually mean?
If it's just locked to removable roof bars then it doesn't sound secure. Also, any lock that's light enough to use on the roof probably isn't all that secure. Although on the flip side I guess using bolt croppers that high up is also tricky.
If I'm leaving bikes outside the I either lock them to a big tree or to the rear axle of the van with a stupidly big pragmasys chain. If I'm feeling optimistic then I'll maybe just lock them to the rack and miss the axle out. But that's just if we're sleeping in the van. I think the whole lot weighs over 100kg so not so easy to steal
Concur completely with Sir HC.
Just take the one bike, we locked ours up in the car overnight too

I very, very rarely leave the bikes unattended away from home, but if I do, I have been known to use a 15mm motorcycle chain looped through the bikes and the roof rails on the car. No, they are not unstealable, but they're also not going to go without a fight...
