as the title fancy trying campag for a change and just wondered how good it is in the mud.

I'm currently looking at the mirage stuff for a start, or if anyone wants to sell an old groupset i'd be interested.

Thanks Iain

I used to run mirage 9sp with no issues, EXCEPT that the hoods are bit on the small side (ie less to hang on to when it all gets a bit hairy). I swapped to Shimano purely cos the hoods were bigger.

I use campag stuff. Probably because it was my old road bike groupset so it went on the cross bike. No probs with it in the mud or anything. Only thing that gives shimano an edge in my book is the ergo levers, campag stuff is flatter, you don't feel as secure going down steep hills and drops. If I bought new I'd probably go for Shimano.

Centaur 10 speed on my Jake, no problems here. I aint racing just trail riding. Seems to work just fine even when its got pretty muddy.

Just for balance I much prefer the shape and operation of campag levers to the shimano I used to have. If it's all getting a bit hairy I am probably on the drops rather than the hoods though.

Except that if you bought new you'd be buying the new shape Campag stuff, which surely has more to hold onto than Shimano?

Campag quality is better, albeit dearer

I run Campag on my road bike, and regret it. It feels cheap and nasty, and I'd not let it near off road.

I've used Campag for cross since 96. Never had a problem with it - still using the original Mirage ergos on what is now the number 2 bike. Bought a new bike earlier this year with 105 - only got the chainset left to sell as 09 Centaur is so much nicer. One big advantage of ergo levers is that when you drop the bike in mud the mechanism is less exposed than in STI levers.

I did hear someone once comment that Campag stuff was far too nice to get muddy whereas Shimano stuff *deserved* to be covered in mud! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Its a lot easier to change gear standing out of the saddle with shimano, having used both I would say this is the main consideration.
