Ive been told the alu freehub is very soft, and that running it with a SS Cog will ruin it?
Anyone had any dramas/ care to shed any light?
I'd have thought it's a given unless you have a cog with a wider base. But no, I don't use one
I have Pro II's on both my SS's. I do have superstar wide base cogs and that is fine. However on one of them I ran a normal width SS cog for a few months and it was fine and made no marks at all.
I used to have a cassette that unknown to me one of the screws had sheared that holds it together and that made more of a mess than my SS cog ever did!!
I've done it and it was fine BUT it was using a wide based sprocket which I would definitely advise having seen the damage even a cassette can do.
I do. I use a wide based on-one cog - Groove armada or something?
I've no personal experience of Pro2's getting mangled, but following the scare stories I played safe and got a Surly wide based cog which hasn't caused any marking on mine.
I tried it for a while before i realised the mess i was making. Was using a narrow sprocket though- it seemed fine before i changed to a higher ratio, not sure whether that affected the amount of stress on the freehub.
I think i saw somewhere that someone had used an old SRAM spider with spacers. I guess they must have filed out a SS sprocket to fit over the spider but looked pretty neat and prevented damage to the freehub body.
