After spending a fortune on 11 speed, was wondering if any used one to protect the chainring teeth? Best be safe eh?!
The chain will do that for you, the chances of damaging the ring are exceedingly small.
The XX1 chainrings don't last long anyway...

Ha, I'm that 'there's always one' in this case, who managed to bend one beyond repair on its second outing.
Been running with a bashring since, and it's been hammered by rocks with big chunks taken out of it, there's no way a chainring would last a long time in my instance.
Run a MRP AMG now, just because I dislike bash rings as they are a mud magnet between the chainring & bash.
Yeah - I run a modified Superstar Slider, with the arm for the rear roller cut off, so have the taco & top guide.
Tore a couple of teeth off and bent a chainring in Finale last season so when I did the new build, made sense to protect it to prevent risk of damage.

Awaiting an MRP XCG dropping into my mailbox for exactly this reason (note: newer XCGs come in much more sizes than the old ones but aren't as readily available. There are plenty on Ebay from the US though, and the prices are good).
I've never managed to damage a chainring that way, the chain does cover the teeth so there's only a risk of maybe bending it... But they're mostly pretty tough. On the other hand, landing on the chain tends to be less pleasant than a bash or taco, they slide less well and the impact's orrible. Wouldn't like to swear by it but I reckon I've crashed because of catching the chainring, where my poly bash would have slid. (I like rolling off steps and banks and stuff, don't know why, every so often I regret it 😉 )
Question... Why a taco? Why not just a bashring? That'll give you a chain retention bonus, and is barely any heavier. And if you're bb mounting, tacos can be a pain, my old XCG used to merrily rotate around the shell til it jammed in the frame.
Bashring = mud haven between the ring and the bash - if it's watery, it's not really an issue, but when it's thick and sticky it gets compacted and the chain can't sit on the chainring properly anyway.
Taco as the frame has ISCG05 mounts and don't think you can fit a bash to SRAM XX1? Could be wrong, plus the Taco is kinda hidden away.
Fair points those, cheers! Never had a problem with mud and bashrings myself but I can see it could be an issue with some designs.
1x 10 but run an MRP AMG. Good bit of kit...
