In particular the Al version?

Considering one with the biannual cycle to work scheme opening at work next month, I'd prefer that steel one but it's well over the £1000 limit.

Is the back end as stiff and unforgiving as it looks? Does it pedal along well for regular riding etc?

Ta.

Have had two AL1s the first one broke but was quickly replaced by Commencal.

The first one was an '11 model with rounded and kinked seatstays and was fairly compliant as far as brutal aluminium hardtails go but the new replacement has box-section seatstays and is as stiff as a very stiff thing. In some ways it's better - very direct drive when sprinting and clatter-free when landing small jumps - but it's a harsher ride.

Not much of an issue when used in its natural environment i.e. ragging around Cannock but for sit-and-twiddle riding I would look elsewhere.

Can't comment on the Al but I have a 2012 steel Ramones which I built up for under a grand. I ride mostly Forest of Dean and Cwmcarn xc and downhill runs and it handles that no problem. Climbs well but really comes alive on tight fast technical trails. Most of my rides are about 3-4 hrs and it is still comfortable at the end.

Agghhh! Didn't want to hear that, the stell version is the one I really like but isn't work scheme tax dodge compatible...
