[#1947216]

Can anybody let me know the approx wheelbase of an 18 or 20" 456 (yes, I know it varies depending on the fork).
Or the axle-axle length, or the overall length. Thanks.

Are you sure about that? That makes the WB over 47" long, which is longer than most DH bikes.

I've just gone out to my garage and measured my 18" and it comes in at 44.25" or 112cm. Wheelbase is static so it doesn't change with the length of the fork but it will change between sizes and the top tube gets longer.

Not sure what you mean by static - but surely the wheelbase would get longer with a longer fork? Maybe not by much, but it would still get longer, non?

I'm trying to get my head around this and am thinking it wouldn't as the effect of a longer fork is raise the front end.

Wheelbase will definitely change with bikes that have rear suspension, more so with single pivots, either longer or shorter depending on where the pivot is located.

You know I'll just go and try it out now in the garage. Hang on a mo!

Yes, it does change - der! 43.75" at 80mm fork travel and 44.25" at 140mm fork travel.

Now I'll get me coat.

Put the back brake on and bounce the front end of a bike. The wheelbase changes with fork length.

Possibly more like 118cm after re-measuring.

hmm, a bit confused now. My new bike, with very similar angles (touch slacker in the h-a), and a fractionally longer tt and chainstays seems shorter when I put it in the back of the van That's all. It might be an illusion, but it seems to fit easier.

My 20" 853 inbred has a wheelbase of 112cm with a 130mm Pace fork on - would expect the same sized 456 to be very similar.

When I bought a 456. Brant told me that the quoted geometry figures for the 456 were just made up because otherwise people wouldn't buy it...

the made up bit sounds likely, though I'd guess the reason as he probably didn't know..

same numbers for the carbon 456 though, and I'd have thought p-x owned the original design, so should have been able to design that off the original drawings.

Static HA measurement on the old 456 with a 140mm fork is coming in at 66 degrees. Just an FYI.
