only had one fitted by lbs from new since january - bearings are rough, and theres a real notchy feel to the headset when the forks are locked out, like there is some play in the headset (guessing if bearings are not smooth then could be why?)

ive put some bearings in which obviously feel much much smoother/new! but why on earth would it be so knackered after 8 months?

FWIW my old 1 1/8th hope headset and bearings laster 3 full years of abuse with only being cleaned every six months

ive put the bearings in the cups with shamfered edge in which i believe is correct, theres no play per se when pulling on the forks/bars?

and then last night, my headset suddenly starting cracking like mad on ever compression, descending or climbing, regardless of open / closed forks...i actually took headset apart whilst out and it seemed to disappear after that, but it was defo the headset cracking

does it sound like just goosed bearings or something else to do with fitment of the headset?

are the cups pressed in square? the cups may not be sitting flat with the headtube. this will cause premature bearing wear

yeah cups are in properly, done by lbs upon building it

i checked that last night and everything looks flush, and with the bearings in it looks flush too

perhaps i didnt tighten the top cap screw enough, and thats what the play is? although there is no ovious movement when pulling on bars/forks

perhaps just unlucky with the bearings this time, ive put some new ones in and havent had the same cracking noise pressing down at home, but not ridden it yet

it sounded awful last night genuiely thought my fork steerer had cracked or similar!

sounds like over tightening causing the bearings to wear then once they have worn the headset goes loose

cheers greeble

hmmmm there was no rocking of the headset though when pulling the bars etc, no side to side play, so it was never loose as such

like said it had some strange feeling through the forks when putting the pressure down climbing etc but never loose

and ive only ever tightened the top cap to 2nm, again its never been loose or felt tight at that

perhaps i fitted the bearings in the wrong way or similar when i put the new forks on a while back and its worn because of that

very very strange as ive fitted/greased all my headsets myself and never had an issue
