[Closed] Anyone ever kinked a steerer INSIDE the stem?

[#5494943]

Had a high-speed off and when I got up, the bars were a bit loose

Checked it today and the steerer tube on the fork has a kink at the end ( as if the stem took the majority of the impact and damaged the tube through it. Lower bolt has stripped the threads on the stem so can't nip it up and the tube is kinked enough that I can't get spacer or headset top off over the kink

Presume ill need a new CSU for the forks (old fox 36 vans) or a donor set but in the meantime, I was wondering if anyone else had had this happen?

EDIT: ill need a new stem as well - but if I can put a new one on and nip it up, is it REALLY safe to ride?

That's pretty high on the "things i wouldn't just keep riding on" list...

I'd replace the whole cockpit tbh. Kudos for what must have been a mighty off

yup, that sort of thing gives me the willies.

You can often see CSUs with little or no use on Pinkbike for around £100

Yes have seen a few, usually a slightly squiffy star nut in line with the cut out in the front of the stem, this can cause the steerer tube to crack

I'd have a good look at the front end of the frame, if I were me

Gone over it looking for any kind of damage but nothing to see really

No paint chipped, or anything out of place. Managed to get the bike down and sliding and was off before it got stopped so all I did was take some old scabs off me knee.

Main damage seems to be to the stem and steerer tube only but gonna have a better look today. Got some spare bars and a stem though...just wondering if it was still relatively rideable if the stem could be clamped on evenly

If the steerer is kinked, don't ride it, if it fails you'll have a stem and bars in your hands, possibly not connected to you fork

Cheers Loco - that's all the advice I wanted, from someone who should know about these things

Out of curiosity, where would I get a replacement? Do mojo stock em or are there cheaper options?

Cracked my steered a few weeks back in France. I didn't even fall off! Just felt a odd movement in the bars so took the forks out to clean everything. It was about 2 inches long and decided after posting in here not to ride them due to what LoCo said. If it fails, you will die!!! Luckily, the CSU's we're replaced 14 months ago by Mojo and they replaced them FOC. When I had them done 14 months ago, the bill was £360 inc bushes! (Fox 36 talas)!

As said above, when I've checked there have been plenty on pinkbike for 100-110

As CSU? Or just old forks?

CSUs. Typical though, last time I looked there were half a dozen different sets for sale, today there's one.... and it's a bit second hand.
