[#6325190]

After coming off at speed after hitting a patch diesel on a downhill bend last December which resulted in several broken ribs (and bruising/grazing etc), then being struck down with campylobacter food poisoning which resulted in internal bleeding keeping me off my bike for a few weeks in May. Once I finally got back on my bike I was as weak as a kitten because of my low blood count. Just when my blood results had returned to normal and was starting to feel stronger again some woman decided not to notice me on a roundabout last night and spread me across her bonnet before being dumped on the road. Following my trip to hospital on a spinal board, fully immobilised (very uncomfortable but very necessary) turns out I only suffered a broken scapula, a couple of broken ribs and a broken wrist.

Bollocks. So that's me back off the bike whilst everything heals. Hope to get back on the turbo as soon as I can.

On the plus side, I may have pain but I'm so off my tits on painkillers that I don't really care,

On the downside, I've done both arms (left shoulder and right wrist). Thankfully the wife's off work to help with dressing/washing etc. Just waiting for the laxatives to kick in after all the morphine and codeine. I can't wait to see her face when I ask her to wipe my arse (she is a nurse and is used to caring for strangers so my arse wiping should be no bother for her).

You need a road bike Lee, it gave me my mojo back.

Although after the last 7 months it's being tested ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

I've got slicks for the CX bike I stick them on for road miles. I don't mind it gets me out and sorted me the last time I was like this. Still much prefer off road riding.

I share your pain, I stacked it 7 weeks ago just as the weather was picking up and the woods drying out and broke 7 vertibrea, 3 in my neck and 4 in my back along with a broken pelvis, 5 ribs, cracked sternum and a fractured shoulder socket, just spent the last 6 weeks with a neck and body brace with the first 4 of those on crutches. The most painful thing I've done since then is sneeze, whatever you do don't sneeze.

I made it out for my first ride last night and am definitely going to have to get on it to get fit again, that and maybe get a slightly better padded saddle. I can see the summer slipping away though whilst I work on getting back up to somewhere near the level I was at previous to my crash.

Good luck with the recovery.

Worst and best! Worst for riding; injury(Broken wrist just as the sun came out, shoulder in the autumn. Hard winter miles with no pay off!) new baby. Best for bike related work; lots of it and the future is looking good!

The same thing has happened to me with running. After passing a fitness test in May, the love has left me and, despite the lovely weather and long evenings, I just cannot seem to get motivated to get out on the trials. Finally managed two runs seven weeks after stopping and was rewarded by sore legs.

I can only hope that the upcoming week away rekindles my love of getting out of the house.

LarLover, take care with the meds and heal quickly.

Cheers Lardlover, lucky for me it was all just bones, no nerve or muscle damage, so healings going along quite nicely.
Enjoy the morphine. with any luck you'll be back on the bike in no time.

Scaled, decided to go riding whilst hanging from the night before, a little dab of the brakes before a fairly big gap scrubbed off just a bit too much speed, I new exactly what I'd done but my hungover brain didn't even think to leapfrog the bars, needless to say, my hangover got a lot, lot worse.
Lesson learned though, no more riding with hangovers.

Travo, you must be made of strong stuff!
I broke 2 vertebrae in February, with some nerve damage; was in brace for almost 3 months, was very lucky not to be paralysed.
I've been advised to give up mountain biking - almost cried when I was told!!
Have only been doing limited road/cycle path rides for last month, your recovery sounds pretty amazing!

Yep

Been off the bike since last September after an operation and then work getting in the way.

Sold two mountain bikes due to not having confidence in my abilities on anything other than a fire road and constant thoughts I am going to bin it and do more damage to my knee.

Picked up a new road bike instead but after so long off the bike my fitness has dropped so much that any ride of more than 5 miles sees me in pain for days afterwards, which is annoying as I was commuting during the summer covering over 100 miles a week. I have no ACL so need cycling in order to keep things working down there.

After the last 9 months I'm on the verge of just abandoning the sport altogether.

Nowhere near as bad as what some of you have been experiencing though, mine seem quite trivial now actually ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Trekex8, 3 months in either the body brace or neck brace would have driven me crazy!, I had very lucky escape with not damaging my spinal core. According to the specialists I've seen I've healed like a 14 year old, only thing is, I still break like a nearly 40 year old, the days of bouncing are long gone.

Nowhere near as bad as crash test dummies up there. ^^^^^

But I'm finally going out tomorrow for the second time this year. The first time was at BPW where I had a big off. Just bruises and a bit of confidence bashing. I've been struggling with a back problem that I've recently had facet joint injections and a root nerve blocks in L4 & L5.

So a bit of mild bimbling and, more than likely, pushing. Need to get some semblance of fitness back before SSUK in September. Hopefully my back is going to hold up.

I've only got out a handful of times and then for xc type rides only. New job, new central London base and no bike suitable car are my excuses. At least I'm doing a short Boris bike ride to/from work. Need to up my mileage as Alps trip only 6 weeks away.

Good and bad.

Started the year getting fitter than I have been for years. Road the Day 1 TdF route back in early May, and then the end of May fell off the bike breaking my wrist and buggering my knee.

Luckily neither too serious, but haven't been able to enter the 3 Peaks Cyclocross, which had been my aim for this year.

Mine has been best and worst too. 2 crashes which have both hurt and given medium term injuries. One still ongoing. However I learned to jump and attacking things I'd have bottled previously

I had an off in Aprill and ruptured my kidney, a week in hospital and nearly 3 months of "nothing strenuous" and summer is slipping by ๐Ÿ™ - I have a scan on Thursday to see how the healing is progressing, fingers crossed. I don't have much time for all this " losing my mojo" whining ......... Go ride while you still can whiners ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™

Nowhere near as bad as some of the above but I've got a mysterious knee problem that comes and goes. Have tried physio, had an MRI scan, all sorts, but at the moment it's about as bad as it's been since last November.

But I can at least get out for a gentle ride every week or two. Just annoying having to avoid long hilly rides and stick to slow solo ones with easy routes home if needed.

Good luck to those recovering from more serious problems!

Was going to say yes but in light of the antics of the 'death wish' brigade ^^^ mines pretty trivial!
Abdominal surgery in Feb and struggled to get out once I was healed. Now flabby and slow and old and slow and unfit and slow and lacking in stamina and slow. Mind is willing but body is not MTFU, off out in an hour to slow down some fast mates.

EDIT: my 'death wish' comment seems a bit crass after Postierich's third lung pic

Miniscus tear on my knee, followed by keyhole surgery kept me off the bike (and everything else!) for 2 1/2 months. My third ride in a week today and I could get out of the saddle to pedal uphill. I'm stoked!
You'll get back into it.... I'm now using my spare time much more wisely as I'm now aware of how finite it can be due to the injury.
Rest, recover and get back on it!

So far all about medical issues - good grief posti rich.

So how about expectations?

After riding well and finding my feet with Road biking last year, I decided this was the year of the Race. Dropped a stone, power/pace numbers went up as did my perception of performance. So I started to race.

But I didn't appreciated all that was required. It's been hard work mentally being lapped on road crits, yet putting in relatively strong performances on sportives and on local mtb races. Clearly I've improved, but not enough.

I'm in a funk at the moment whilst having a drop of performance and not sure if I'm wasting my time with all the effort - I can't do much more around my work / family life - I mean, what's the point in sweating your arse off and paying the entry fees just to "lose"? On the flip side someone said to me "think of the caterham F1 team; they'll never win except by circumstance, but they have to be at a certain level just to take part. That in it's own is an achievement for all involved"

So I'm actually not sure whether it's been a bad year a good year or an educational year. In reality I just wanted to show my 5yo whose really into bikes that Daddy was good at something; whereas the reality is he'll realise when he's old enough that those medals hanging on his bedroom door are finishers medals, and effectively mean sod all.

Meh.

I was going to say yes, but my reasons are much more pathetic!

Work seems to be my biggest barrier at the mo....seem to be getting flogged to death and get home so pooped I can't really be bothered. I riding less this summer than I was last year when I was spending three days a week in London.

I have also had my worst crash yet this year which had knocked my confidence big time.

turns out I only suffered a broken scapula, a couple of broken ribs and a broken wrist.

Was gonna say, scap's a bad bone to break, takes awhile to heal, but Postie Rich has rather changed my perceptions!

Managed to break a toe, a frame and sever the tendons on my pinky this year but I'm still out there loving it.

Compared to some others, mine sounds a bit pathetic, but after relocating to a rather rural part of India where there are no pools, the roads are virtually unridable, I get harassed when out running and I have no training partners, I didn't improve on my IM PB and only managed a disappointing 11:36 in South Africa.

Looking forward to escaping from here hopefully in October back to civilisation!

Cheers, Rich
