[Closed] Any thoughts/suggestions on wheel problem?

[#6363580]

So I went down the lock up last night to do some jobs on the bikes, one of the jobs was to get the cross bike working again as not had much time of late but that's another story!

My problem started when I came to drop the rear wheel into the drop outs and attempt to tighten up the QR as I have done many times on many bikes, but this time after tightening up the QR I realised the wheel would not spin/turn!

At first I thought it was the BB7 brake caliper that needed adjusted, but even after I had dialled the pads all the way back the wheel wouldn't move without any force, I then thought I had over tightened the QR so I backed it off a little which in turn then allowed the wheel to spin forward but still not move backwards and on top of that the wheel did not seem 100% secure when I had eased of the QR.

For me the problem lies when I tighten the QR as it compresses the drop outs against the rear hub which in turn(or not in my case) prevents the wheel spinning easily in either direction.

The hubs, wheels and skewers are all PX and wondered if anyone else had any thoughts or solutions on the above.

Any help appreciated as usual...

Bearing seized in the wheel, most probably in the freehub.

If it has cup and cone bearing the QR compresses the cups slightly and tightens the whole thing up. If the cones are set to tight or the hub is crusty this could be a enough to stop it turning freely. There are plenty guides online to servicing cup and cone hubs (eg park tools) that explain this problem.

If it has cartridge bearings then they're probably goosed.

I'm pretty sure they are cartridge bearings and not cup and cone, I will take a better look tonight.

So is what your saying that when I tighten the QR it is compressing drop outs against free hub which in return is pressing against the cartridge bearing thus preventing it spinning freely?

Thanks for the help so far...

What are the parts? Hub, frame, wheel diameter etc.

If it turns one way, are you sure the cassette locking isn't hitting the frame?

Gofasterstripes you may have a valid point, though you would think or hope all would work fine as everything is Planet X except the cassette which is SRAM.

But what your saying makes sense as there is not much space between the cassette locking and drop outs and it does look very tight!

Could it be the cassette that's the problem? Is there anything I can do except buy new cassette?

Can do pictures but will be this evening..

Is there a badger stuck in the spokes?

While BN's suggestion is somewhat unlikely, I'll hold off judgement until I see photos to prove theres no badger.

Also just by because its the same brand doesnt mean it's all xcompatable.

Most likely thing that's happening is that the bearing(s) siezed, and the whole hub and axle are spinning in the dropouts until you clamp it with the qr. It may not be a badger, but also worth checking there's nothing jammed between your spokes and cassette.

It may not be a badger, plenty of other large-ish mammals about at this time of year.

Could it be a fox?
