I have just brought some fulcrum red metal 3 s discounted for £250 because I want to save some weight and go tubeless ,but I am worried if they will take my 16.5 stone weight doing the occasional 2 ft drop ? they are rated as xc/enduro your thoughts please 😀

don't know about the red metal series, but i have a set of racing 1 road wheels and they are light, stiff and have taken a load of abuse over the past three years, but are still within 1mm of true.

The hubs are Campag ones, the Fulcrum name is largely to widen the appeal of their stuff. The only problem i have found is that they have a tiny pawl spring inside the rear hub, which if not lubricated from time to time, will wear out.

Having said that, i only know this as the one in my hubs broke, but it was after 2 and a half years, and a couple of thousand miles. if you know to squirt grease in them from time to time they are fine. Besides, the replacement spring costs about £1.50 and takes about 10 minutes to fit...

I got some Red Metal 5s on my Zesty last year and was not overly impressed

The rear bearing pre-load constantly came loose, the wheels didn't stay particularly true (24 spoke on a 140mm travel bike...hmmm) and the wheels were not very light

Additionally, it would have cost me £80 to upgrade the front wheel to a 15mm axle

Swapped to some Hope Evo's with Crest rims - £330 - way better in every way

if you've bought them- ride them. try to avoid drops to flat, but give t a few rides you'll know. if they start to shift off true, maybe ebay them before the DH weekend you were planning...?

A mate has a pair, only problem he found was with the front disc rotor being a big too close to the fork lower (centre lock ) . Couldn't find a solution other than letting the rotor wear a bit of the fork lower away so it stopped catching.

Have a pair for 2 1/2 years, I might be carrying a few more pounds than you and they have held up well (still tru, good tension, no fitting issues), although more of wheels on ground style, on a trek ex.
