Quite fancy a long day out (25-40km) on Saturday somewhere in the central to north-western Lakes. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be nice and dry? Did High Street last time which was a massive disappointment with the bog on top, although the bit around Ullswater was good. Possibly part of the 3 passes route, but might be a bit hard for the group. Are any of the Helvelyn BWs ridable for those with less confidence?
Cheers!
Very wet in and around Keswick. There's only a few (cheeky) routes here that can stand up to the amount of rain we've had recently.
Are you travelling from out of Cumbria? If so, I wouldn't bother with any of the Helvellyn routes...they're too short if you're looking for a decent day out.
Coming over from N.Yorks. Was hoping to avoid trail centres and get on the top of some hills before the winter arrives!
Cross Fell, but that will be wet, very, very wet ๐
Bowderdale, but that will be wet, very, very wet.
Walna Scarr itself will be OK but the stuff down around Broughton Wood will be.....wet ๐
The longish, tough but some would say boring ride from Keswick, Threlkeld to Skidaw YHA down to Mosedale and across the Caldbeck Fells and back via White Water Dash climb/hike. Along Glenderterra and down Latrigg back into Keswick.
Messing about in/on the Grisdale bridleways might be best option starting in Hawkshead or Ambleside ๐ก Still be wet but mostly hard packed/rocky terrain ๐ก
Watching this with some interest.
We are heading to the lakes next weekend. We were planning on doing Grizedale with the bridleway down to Parkamoor and back thrown in on the Saturday and then doing a lop around Loughrigg Fell and the Langdales on Sunday.
Do locals think those ones will be rideable after all the rain?
Skidaw YHA down to Mosedale
Will be an unbelievable quagmire.

+1 or go to Keswick and do the Borrowdale Bash.
I haven't been out on the bike around Grizedale for a couple of weeks, but the fields around the area are all very, very soggy. The North Face is probably okay as that is surfaced (although there were some filthy boggy bits the other day).
I am ashamed to say that I have never ridden the Parkamoor descent ๐ Moved here 4 years ago, pretty much stopped riding... and only just starting to get back into it again!

Couldn't agree more. Did this in March when it hadn't rained anything like as much as it has recently, and it wasn't much fun then.
Whenever there's loads of rain in the lakes I go South - Loughrigg Langdales etc. There'll be puddles but nowt as bad as Keswick area.
plus it's mostly rock/hardpack so drains v.well.
We saw some (very polite !) MTBers in Seathwate who had descended from Styhead I assume - which ride/route would they have most probably done ?

Most likely to have been the four passes...that descent from Styhead Tarn is excellent. ๐
We're heading to Coniston for a long weekend next weekend. Is there any hope of getting some riding in?

Hopefully the rain will wash away the new surface they put on Walna Scar Road and it'll be back to it's good old state!
Was up Helvellyn via whiteside zigzags and down Sticks pass on tuesday in howling gale and rain, the terrain is all good in these conditions. Could add in the ullswater lakeshore singletrack for a fuller day?

Hi I'm in Grasmere...I've been out today see route here http://connect.garmin.com/activity/229876193
Unfortunately there isn't realy any avoiding the muck and water at the moment given the rain we've had over the last week or so....it's good clean muck though ๐
