As it says on the tin really.

A relocation means I'm heading down that way and wondering whether theres anything hidden away in the surrounding woods worth checking out.

Otherwise I suppose its Haldon, Woodbury, Dartmoor, Exmoor and the 'tocks. all of which require a drive.

Born and bred in Uffculme, ~ 6 miles away.
Not sure of the current off-road situation, as didn't have mtb when I lived there. Did used to put bike in back of car when seeing folks and go for some lane trips. The lanes around Culm Valley, going up through Uffculme, kentisbeare, Culmstock, Hemyock are brilliant. Relatively quiet, stunning scenery in a rolling Devon sort of way. Not sure of the bridleway network, but get some local maps when you're down. It's all rolling hills in the Culm valley, and there are linking bridleways around depending on route.
Current state of Devon roads after the winters' snow means you'll need an off-road bike to use them anyway!
Haldon - straight down M5 takes you over the Haldon Hill - 30mins-ish?
Dartmoor - bit longer, depending on where.
Q's - heading the other way - 'not far' and probably same sort of distance as Dartmoor.

....but nip over the M5 and get into the lanes, even that is brilliant, and I'm sure you'll build up a network of bridleways given a few days out.
best of luck

'fraid it is..... but it's a nice part of the world to be, and quite central for lots of areas being on the M5.
You soon discover that anywhere else in Devon is a real s*d to get to as the roads are bad. I'm in the Teign valley, 8miles out of Exeter. It takes me longer to do the 55-ish miles to get to the north coast than it does to do the 120odd miles to get across the Severn Bridge into Wales!
....but I wouldn't move for all the world!!!!!
cheers

I am just down the road in Hemyock nice area to live in ( after a long time in Swindon) I have not found much locally bar the Culmstock beacon but the Q's are fantastic and there is alot of superb riding a short drive away from you as you say Haldon ,Dartmoor, Exmoor and Woodbury all of which are worth the drive.

Wow, my missus used to live in Hemyock, and tells stories of catching trout by the old factory, as far as riding goes theres some nice(short) singletrack on the beacon and some more in Culm davy woods and further along past the monument.

dropoff: My mate was a local boy scout ( they all were! ) and at 'Bob-a-job' week they *all* used to try and get into the factory to try and nick some " Factory Schizer" well, that's what they called it!
It was the skimming off the milk products and was like a dark yellow/brown thick paste. A lot used to get washed into the Culm with the water, so the trout used to get really fat on it. Consequently, if a lump had a hook in it....!!!!!!!!
If not being to nosey, when was your missus living in Hemyock?

I originate from down there as well - Uffculme, Hemyock old school time haunts! Parents own a farm near Sampford Peverell. I've often wondered about Ashclyst Forest, just south of Cullompton. We used to go camping there (another Scout) and then later on to buy rough ol' cider from a cottage in the woods. Just a box full of any old bottles, milk cartons etc filled with the 'finest' cider and just a honesty box for payment!
Must be some tracks around there. Genereally when I'm down that way now I head up to the Quantocks.
