Need a new camera after the death of my trusty TZ7 ๐Ÿ˜ฅ and have become tempted with a more serious camera with out the size of slr's

One feature i like with the GF2 is the ability to add a view finder on the flash shoe thing..sorry can't think of its proper name..
Does this have any real world benefit , i always found action shots in sunlight a pain with the tz7 without the view finder.
Seems strange to loose the stereo mics from the 2 to 3 especially as the TZ7 has stereo, maybe there's good reason who knows..?

Any other comparisons with the two cameras would be appreciated or just opinion on either..

I do seem to like the feel of Panosonic hence sticking with these two for now..

Ta

Oh the TZ7 has a big scratch on the lense any tricks/fixs to stop it showing on pictures would be great aswell.. ๐Ÿ˜

I like my GF2 but the screen in sunlight issue is a problem. I'm only just getting to grips with the functionality on it and as a pure-punter-picture-taker there is a lot of functions and stuff to learn.

I like it with the little pancake lens because it means I am willing to take it with me... actually bothering to stop and get it out and faff about and take pictures is more of an issue.

I went for the GF2 partly for the viewfinder option... but not felt a need yet.

For scratches on lenses, the wider the aperture of the lens, the less likely it is it will be seen!

The panasonic gf series can use a stereo mike I think it fits into the accessory port where you can also put the external viewfinder!

I use an Olympus EP3 very similar to the Panasonics as they use the same basic architecture.

I use this Leica lens all the time (can't afford the 2k to replace it)

Unless I use really tiny apertures then it never gets noticed!

Thought about the LX5? Bit smaller than the GFs. Plus once you start putting some good size lenses on the GFs, the size of the body becomes less relevant, and you might as well have an SLR anyway.

LX5: loads of control, wide angle 24mm to 90mm, fast lens. not interchangeable, but lens is threaded for wide or tele converters. Still got the hotshoe viewfinder option, too.

Pepper, do you not get lens flare with that crack?

I too have a GF2, it takes some cracking pictures, screen glare can be a bit of a problem but other than that it is perfect for me. Fits nicely in my camelbak.

I bought the G2 because I didn't like the lack of viewfinder on the GF2, and in combination with the better grip on the G2, am very happy with my decision. Unless its on a tripod I'm using the viewfinder, so far.

GF2 here, not used it much, went for a 14-42 and while wee-er than an slr it's closer to that than a compact.

I like it though...I couldn't remember the last time I'd used a viewfinder when choosing it, don't miss it.

Not the the same choice but I couldn't decide between a GX1 and G3. They are nearly identical in spec but the GX1 is smaller (without view finder) but the G3 costs less especially when you factor in the view finder.
In the the end I went with the G3 as I couldn't justify the extra just for looks. The view finder is really good, much better than I had on my E-500, in fact the whole body is, and it is noticeably smaller. The only issue is the lack of fast AF lenses for it. I'd really like something in M4/3 to replicate the 14-54 I had for the E-500. Having said that the M4/3 system has the best choice of any CSC and I'm sure more will be released soon.
There have been bad consumer reviews about the 14-42x lens, it may be pixel peeping though so may not bother you.

Sorry, but that is not true:

IMHO the viewfinder is important for some shots, maybe 40%?

I use a GH1, had it for over 2 years, like it a lot. I tried a GF1 and didn't like it. For me, a built in viewfinder and a swivel LCD screen are mandatory. I'd advise looking into one of the Micro Four Thirds cameras with built in viewfinders if you want that. The attachable ones are easy to loose / break, and add bulk. A secondhand GH1 is probably good value for money now. I did all my photos at http://niksbikingblog.blogspot.com/ on the GH1 with the 14-45mm lens (apart from the UWA twilight shot right at the end of the video).
