I tried the race pens this year as I qualified last year from the Sportive. I'm in the 65-70 age group & stayed with the peleton for the first 28mi, or so, until 2 adjacent riders crashed out on a corner (one sliding the other out!). I must have eased off as the peleton got down the road from me. After riding solo for a few miles I re-grouped with 2 age groupers & we shared the load a bit - but the wind was brutal! The signage around the airport was apalling with several riders goung the wrong way & getting lost - v poor organisation. First time I tried the race pen & strangely enough all my strava segment times were faster last year in the Sportive. Strange - was that just the weather OR as there was lots of tactics in the 'race' (easing off / doing breaks) was the Sportive just easier to maintain a steady speed? Results aren't out yet but my average for the 69mi was 21mph - which is a bit dissapointing for a closed roads. How did others do?
