Following on from previous thread, looks like I need to jailbreak in order to tether for free.
I'm new to the iPhone and know little about this procedure.. although have Googled a bit and noted the pros and cons.
My phone is running latest software, iOS 5.0.1
Anyone know of an untethered, free way to jailbreak?
Is the best/only option to pay for and download RedSnow?
Anything else I should be aware of?
All advice gratefully received 🙂
My 15yr old will be able to answer this, however I dont expect to see him until about 2pm when he gets up out of his bed. 🙄

RedSn0w is the way to go but DO NOT pay for it. It's free software distributed by the Dev Team (see their official site [url= http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ ]http://blog.iphone-dev.org/[/url]). ANY site asking for payment is a scam site.
btw untethered jb is not available for 4GS yet, only iPhone 4 or before
1) Which version iPhone? If 4S, then you will have to wait a little while, as the A5 JB is not ready yet. 3GS and 4 models have a untethered JB which works fine with 5.0.1.
2) Untethering, if detected and not part of your contract/agreement, may get you in trouble with your provider.
3) Never every pay for software like Redsnow. It is provided free. If you have paid for it, you have been ripped off.

I would recommend PDANet from Cydia store for stealth untethering.

Err.. How do I download redsnow, as safari on my phone won't allow it??

Presumably you are locked into a contract with whoever is making you pay for tethering? If not then switching to Three gives you free tethering without any messing around.

I read through the link you sent and realise I need to download redsnow to computer and not phone.
Don't have laptop with me so will try later when home.
I've tried to do it on the phone but on clicking download it states it's unable to do.
So do you have a jail broken iPhone? You could be useful to contact later if I get confused!
Don't get tethering (for laptop internet via your phone) confused with tethered jailbreak (you can only switch your phone on when it's connected to a computer).
You can't download Redsnow on your phone. It's a program you have to run from your PC/laptop. It's not hard though, definitely no need to pay anyone to do it for you. Just download and run Redsnow and do as the instructions say.
