I picked up a Dolan Preffisio for cheap last summer to build into a commuter bike. I put on Flinger mud-guards as per their own spec but have had all manner of issues with the mudguards rubbing on the tyres.

Initially i had 25mm Continental 4 seasons which Dolan advised come up big and as such are more akin to a 28 which is why they rubbed.

I've dropped to 23's and they still rub. Its like there just isn;t enough clearance under the brace to get the mudgaurd in the right place and as such the bridge on the guard always rubs on the tyre.

Has anyone found a perfect combination of tyre to mudguard on this bike? I'm getting close to throwing the toys out the pram and buying a different frame that will accomodate 25mm tyres better.

Some forks are just too close for guards. Or the profile of the fork is not suited to the profle of the guard and tyre. Look at the cross section of the fork crown. Is it their Alpina fork? I have a Ritchey fork that is the same. For that there are other options. Giant Defy guards or SKS Raceblade Long that don't fit under the fork crown.

Or n+1.

can you file out the hole to raise the brace thereby lifting the guard off the wheel? Done that on some SKS, plastic brace is easier.

Is there enough room between the bridge and the tyre for the mudguard if you don't use the brace? Either alter the brace as suggested or pop a couple of holes in the guard and use a zip-tie. Get the guard right against the bridge.

I ovalised the cut out in the plastic bridge to raise it but it made little difference so I kind of put it back to where it was. The lit cake with a metal bridge that you had to shape yourself which I didn’t fancy so bought the proper plastic one. I’m wondering whether to give the metal one a crack. After 50miles commuting today and squeeking guards I was ready to rip them off and bin them

Both of my kids had them and I could run 23s with full mudguards no problem but not 25s.

Are the brake blocks slammed right against the top of the slot in the caliper arms? If not I'm struggling to see how this could be a fault with the frame, just a bit of a design/compatibility issue with the guards.

If they are slammed, maybe the bridge has been welded a touch low.

All fixed now. I tried to be lazy/clever when i got the guards and bought the plastic pre-formed arch. In short the shoulders on this where it clips round the guard were too wide and rubbing on the side wall of the tyre. The guard itself had loads of room but the arch only had about 1-2mm clearance on both sides.

I managed to find the metal arch that you have to shape yourself and gave it a whirl. Took about 5mins to bend/fix and has worked perfectly instantly. Loads of clearance now, even to the extent i reckon i could get my 25's back in there.
