[#13027598]

Need new disc brakes ahead of an uplift day in 10 days.  Currently have an old set of shinano deore, but keen to try non shimano as two set of mine seem to leak mineral oil onto the disc.

I spotted these TRP slate evo brakes for £90 at Merlin  https://www.merlincycles.com/trp-slate-evo-front-and-rear-disc-brake-set-282217.html

and these Magura MT trail sports for £180  https://www.merlincycles.com/magura-mt-trail-sport-disc-brake-set-102037.html

has anyone got experiences with either or seen any other good options?

i love my maguras but hte TRP's are hard to ignore if you need a bargain and arnt tied to a brand (i've lots of maguras on teh family bike collection!)

Maguras can be a bit faffy to bleed apparently but i've not had an issue yet. the levers can also be a bit fragile but i've crashed mine loads and mine have been fine (2.5yrs)!

for comparison my Guides are scarily shit in comparison to the maguras (same pad compounds) much less power even compared to the single pot magura caliper. I do like shimano brakes (deores) as well though - when they dont leak.

Buy via a sale what you normally couldn't afford. Cheap brakes are a bad economy, you are simply getting poor quality for less.

Get the trp slate evo's.  V good brakes

The slate t4's are also good for £70.

I have sets of both evos and non evos on my bikes after swapping from guide re's.

No loss in power and better lever feel.

Thanks for everyone’s replies, will give the TRP’s evos a go based on the above.

Trp evo I'd happily pay double if I needed new brakes

Some love for the TRP Evo on here. Anyone care to compare them to Shimano 4 pots in terms of lever feel? I love the grabby bite of  Shimano brakes but I'm fed up with their tendance to and tenacity at leaking.

Something that feels similar but keeps the oil inside the system is appealing to me.

Might have to get a set of those Guide REs - need new hoses and pads for my Elixirs anyway and the hose kit alone is £30!

The trp evo comes with the power pads made by gakfer ,blue backed pads or green if you  buy them branded galfer.

For my 64kg weight using the 2.3mm rotors it's like dropping a boat anchor in power but very controllable the cool kids call it modulation.

I've got 2 sets and the best bit about them is the lever stays the same no wondering bite point.

It's honestly so refreshing after years of shimano .

I've had no issues with sticky pistons and as there ss they shouldn't stick either

The other thread of the guy saying he had a sticky piston looked to me in the photo like he'd pushed the piston back unevenly

However I treat them the same as all my  brakes

Every couple of months I take the pads out clean the piston with a cotton ear bud dowsed in mineral oil

Wipe off excess .

Love them

I've got hope tech 4 v4 on my big bike and whilst the quality materials are clearly better and they perform better I could get 4 sets of trps and shed loads of pads and still have change

There not 4 times worse than the new v4 tech 4

The sram is a good option but the std lever with the bushing is awful, they end up rattling and the phenolic pistons need constant maintenance here in the UK

I have just seen that they are compatible with 2.3mm rotors, so will have to order some of those as well I think my current ones are 1.8mm and probably due a change anyway. Is it only TRP and Hope that make the 2.3mm rotors?

I've got those maguras on an ebike and they're pretty good, definitely good stoppers.

Although through some weird software issues I got mine for about £60.
