I tried clamp on grips when they first came out. But I found them very uncomfortable mainly because I tend to almost hang my hand off the end of the bar. This means ulnar nerve part of my palm is resting on the metal clamp which becomes painfull.

Are they any comfortable ones yet say just with the clamp in the middle.

Specialised BG only have 1 clamp inboard of the grip and have an extra bit on the outer end to relieve ulnar pain, works well and 1/3 of the price of Ergon.

Pro Athertons have a clamp at just one end.

Sounds like you need wider bars

Ergons are very comfy imho.
i often find myself riding with the heel of my hand on the end of the bar , even if i got no bar end, and the ergons are just reet for me

Specialized Enduro grip single clamp and look great in brown. Best grip I have used quite thick but not like a toilet roll tube thick if you get me. I had the same problem with using bar ends I had my hand on the metal all the time with the Odi style clamp grips. When not running bar ends my hands are just too wide for those style of grips.

Another vote for wider bars here, or at the very least try moving your brake levers further inboard. Increasing the width of your bars and moving your controls inwards at the same time results in your hands being in the same position but no longer hanging off the end of the bars.
