I'm giving flat pedals a shot, in a probably futile attempt to improve my riding skills. I have some DMR V8s but I don't find them very comfortable. I think maybe that I'd prefer something with more platform to them. Any recommendations for reasonalby inexpensive alternatives I could try?

What's cheap? Good question! Well I've always been happy with Shimano M540 SPDs so laying out much more than their 30-40 quid price on something I'm only experimenting with would rankle a bit.

I have Shimano shoes, not 5-10s.

Really happy with my Superstar Nano Tech flats - dunno if £42 is cheap but it's not ridiculously expensive.

Twice now I've bought Jackshits to try flats and twice they've ended up going to a needy friend or relative.
Still seems to be available for 15 quid from some shops and the last set I got have the Kona logo in black so they're stealthy for use on non-Konas.
The new Wah Wah looks alot nicer with a slim profile, but they're 50 quid.

It's kind-of surprising that the extra size of a flat pedal over a SPD really does seem to be making a difference about the number of pedal strikes and the like I'm encountering, so something like the Wah Wahs or the Nano Techs is tempting.

I'd dispute the Nano tech being the "same" as the Wah Wah but they look good for 42 quid and are available in some bright colours too (if you like that sort of thing).

Think the SS Nano Techs are actually the same as these Deity pedal which are £79.99 - http://www.extrauk.co.uk/product/detail/Deity/Flat_Pedals/2936/

Are the through-pin Nano Tech pedals a better idea (albeit available in fewer colours)?

why do you find v8s uncomfortable? the only problem ive had is forgetting to regrease the bearings after a wet ride. I think they can be saved.

btw i'm currently trying gusset slimjims which seeme ok but i'm woried about the bearings already.

yes you get more strikes but you'll get over that. i ride about 50/50 spds or flats

Some of it I expect is general issues of getting used to flats after riding exclusively with SPDs. On the other hand the back of the V8s seem to press into the arch of my foot a bit (not used to shoes with flexible soles when riding either) so I was wonering if there were pedals with more of a platform - the V8s seem to be more like 3 bars with pins and a lot of space between them.

V8s do seem to have a limit in foot size IMHO.
Alot of the pedals suggested here will have a far larger platform and a more concave effect.
The Superstars at 42 quid look like the best compromise between "cheap enough for punt" and "good enough to keep for a while".

Those are really good and cheap, exactly the same as Gusset Slim Jims... Which are great in themselves.
