[#3788996]

Pretty close to ordering a nukeproof mega frame but not sure on size. I'm just over 5'11" and torn between medium and large. I've always ridden mediumish bikes and they've felt good and chuckable but I have no experience of larger bikes...

I know this is gonna sound obvious but with the Mega I would really try and get a ride. I'm just about 5'11 maybe 5'10 and a 1/2 and I have a medium. However i like a smaller frame for the chuckability factor. I have a mate who is the same height and he has a large. When I was running the flat bars that I had on my previous bike (780mm Renthals) I felt that I was too far over the front on steep stuff and drops onto steepish landings I was always a little nose heavy. I was using a 40mm stem so I tried a 60mm one but it didn't help and changed other stuff about the handling that I didn't like, everything else already felt perfect. I tried some old riser bars that I had and apart from being too narrow it seemed to cure it, I felt it put my upper body in a more upright postion. Now running the Renthals that have the most rise out of the 3 variations available and have them cut down to 760mm and the bike feels perfect. I think if I was any taller tho I would probably want the large frame. Sorry if that was a bit rambling but I hope it helps. If you're anywhere near Cumbria you're welcome to come and take it for a spin

Thanks for the information fella. Some good food for thought there. I wish I was over cumbria way sometime soon as I'd take you up on that. I'm across in Newcastle at the mo but working away lots. Its quite annoying as I'm right on the borderline between frame sizes and at 900 quid I wanna make sure I get it right... Out of interest what forks you running on the mega and what drivetrain? I've got some 160 coil lyriks sat in the garage and thinking of setting up as a 2x9 as I already have 90% of the drivetrain parts

I'm the same height as you and have a large. I had a quick play on a medium, and it felt way too short for me. Love the large, with a 50mm stem and nice wide bars, reach is good and it doesn't feel unwieldy.

I have mine set up with air Lyriks, 1X10, and a dropper seat post. Tip top.

5.9 here and a small..if that helps!
50mm stem and 725 bars and laid back post

I would go medium for 5.11 - large would be a gate IMHO

@freeridenick... I thought that as well. I've never owned a "large" bike in my life. Especially not that kind of bike. Just goes to show that a cheeky test ride is always beneficial. Large defo isn't a gate.

6'0 riding a medium.

get the geometry on paper in front of you and compare it with what you are used to.

for me the TT of the bike i was replacing was exactly between medium and large

captain - you must have super long legs for a 5.11 chap! That bike looks big to me!

Agree with freeridenick! mine looks like that, but i'm 6' 4" with a 34" inside leg, not short!

I'm 5.10 and ride a medium, but I like small bikes as I find them more nimble, if you can get a ride on one as they are strange to begin with it has quite a short cockpit with a 50mm stem like mine, really depends on what sort of riding your mostly going to do on it. Mine is more FR based, 1x9, CCDB, dropper, 800mm bars etc

6 foot and I ride a Medium, love it. Perhaps should have tried a large but I bought one when they were frame only bikes. I with bars that are very low rise without any spacers (now) as well, I like the front wheel to be weighted up loads. Although I guess this might mean I'm hanging off the back to much and need to move my weight forward, in which case I might need a riser.

Boxxer what are your ccdb settings? I'm gonna buy one.

One thing I would think about is do you move around the bike to corner or do you move the bike underneath you? I've noticed perhaps because the wheelbase is shorter than downhill bikes I've used in the past that I corner better when moving the bike around underneath me as opposed to chucking my weight around, almost like I can lean to far over the bike.

That's not what I bought it for though, I wanted chuckability on mini-dh trails that I could pedal to the top of...and go on 20-25km downhill biased trail excursions.

I'm running the CCDB not far off the base settings in cane creeks manual, just a slight tweak to the LSC +1 turn and +1 on the HSR but I'm still playing, I'm smack between springs rates so I'm currently trying out a 450lb spring so need to tweak again really but I much prefer it to a higher spring rate.

As for knuckles I have just about managed to keep them but I have clipped the bars a few times now 🙂

a coil shock does transform the bike,
even a simple Van R like I have.

full hooligan mode with Totems and avid code 4 pots as well 😛

I'm the same height, and i'm getting pains just looking at that saddle height!

Or your riding shoes are a pair of 70's 6" platforms... You measured yourself recently? Not grown at all have you?

Boxxer there's a really good spring calculator on Cane Creeks website now, it allows you to dial in preload. The calculator shows that taking preload into account, being between spring rates shouldn't be a problem.

Bwaarp... Yep found that, it says I can use either a 450 or 500 more preload on the 450. Might buy a 500 too as they're only £20 see what difference there is if any. Anyone else running a CCDB on their Mega?

Thanks for all of the responses STW'ers! Some really good info here. I'm leaning slightly towards the medium now... But I have definitely decided on a colour! Just need to soften the blow to the missus now that I'm about to spend £1500 on a frame and various other bits I need 😯

What colour? Get silly Yellow, you know you want to. My bikes slowly going Bmx style because I'm a tit. Next up, black anodized seatpost as the white ones get scratched to easily, white tioga spyder saddle (should be easy to clean as it isn't leather), white goodridge hoses, white bars, single ring with a 34 tooth ring and 36 out back coupled to a chain device with white highlights. Yeahhh boiiii. 😆

Plus the yellow is painted, you can get it resprayed when it get's scratched. You can't so easily with the others.

That photo was taken just after I'd built it up. Can't remember if I'd set the saddle height. Maybe not!

5 11, ape positive, and on a large. Watch the short tt, don't go by the label, the large mega has near identical geo to a medium orange alpine. I wanted long and stable and got it.

Short tt? It's longer than a Medium Nomad.

I know, i sat on a medium nomad and found it really small. Check out the Nukeproof Facebook page, they just made an XL Mega for one of their 6'3" mates.
