in the process of replacing my chainrings. i've got where the big ring should be positioned (with the small silver stud hidden behind the crank arm) but do the middle and small rings need to be in a certian position?

yeah, theres a little 'sticky out bit' to mark the segment that goes by the crank arm.

Got that dj but what about the position of the middle and inner rings? Or doesn't it matter?

yes. you want it so the top of the egg is at 12 o'clock when the crank arm is vertical. hth
