I have a new rear mech, new hanger, new cable. The chain, cassette and rings aren't new, but aren't old at 4 months (ish).

It all indexes fine, but it won't drop from the top cog on the rear. It's as if the spring in the mech has gone. It drops through the rest fine.

something else weird.... when pushing the thumb shifter, it seems to push through some slack i.e. moves with no resistance, then catches and shifts. The cable is taught at all times

What's going on?

Is the B tension screw adjusted so that the jockey wheels catch the big ring on the cassette?

Happened to me once, took me ages to figure out what was going on.

I had a similar issue on frame change...

Turned out my jockey wheel cage would hang over the largest cog on the cassette when put into 1st. This meant that it wouldn't drop to 2nd as the cage would be held by the 1st gear.

I had to put another 3-4 links of chain in so the cage sat lower down.
