Check this out, another town in the US is banning biking on the roads as a means to improve road safety, instead of slowing cars down. It's crazy and a worrying trend. Do you think that this could happen in the UK? With the way it sometimes feels us cyclists are regarded by Joe Public I wouldn't be surprised.

I suspect Dave and George are reading that and drooling in excitement. Yes it could happen here. Yes everyone should resist it.

crazy!

America is a lot more car obsessed than we are in the UK though. Just look at all the massive SUVs they drive round in. They even ban crossing the road/jaywalking!

not all the US is like this

When I went last year there were towns which equalled or outstripped bike use here - New York, Santa Cruz and San Francisco. Santa Cruz in particular has a real bike culture (no surprise I guess, but everyone seemed to be riding around on beach cruisers)

There were other places though where bikes were basically invisible. And I was shocked by the whole jaywalking thing - basically people on foot are 2nd class citizens waiting an age for the lights to change.

I hope you're right it couldn't happen here. The mentality that the speed limit is 55mph so it must be safe is crazy. If you google: "joe brazil" drink driving ... then there is an interesting press report too that nobody is reporting. Joe Brazil is the road safety genius who proposing this ban.
