So I'm itching for a new bike & am being swayed towards a 29er hardtail, for winter riding initially.
Got a frame only option in mind, have tried a 29-er (quickly) so am happy the 29er thing will work for me. Though I plan to try and demo the bike/frame before embarking proper..
What components?
Want a 100-120mm fork (can be tapered or full 1.5) though it'd have to have a 15/20mm axle
What wheels?
Will i die swapping over my 9 speed gears? (to keep costs down)
So obvious choice for me are RS Reba's of some flavour.
SSC (I know their rep) wheels seem a bargain & though in the black, I'm only 'just' in the black
Do I need bigger bigger (front) rings, or will they work for now?
Thoughts? (not on the 29er debate cheers)
Thoughts?
You are unable to make simple decisions or use the search function?
Joy a totally useless comment, but this is STW
So the when I've put questions, and given my answer based on threads/search/my own (26er) opinions, but am looking for real world (29er) user opinions I can't make decision or use the search function?
I think you need to get over yourself.
What frame have you got in mind and what type of riding are looking at doing? Pipedreams is just taking ordered on their new 29ers. Looks very nice and at a good price.
Ive got a canfiel yelli screamy. Fantastic frames! They are so much fun but also surprisingly good at climbing.
Im also running Reba RL 100mm fork on it with 15QR. Good fork. Light and stiff. Looking at getting more travel for the yelli though.
For wheels the only choice is really hope hoops. Great price and weight but if costs an issue then SSC will be fine. I know many people running them without issues. My flows are very nice.
You'll be fine transfering 1x9 across. Ive done it on a different bike and theres no issues with the gearing. Yes 1x10 is great but not worth it if you have a fully functioning 9 groupset.
If you run riser bars on the 26'' i'd look at getting low rise/flat bar on the 29er but thats personal preference.
Hope that helps a bit?
An idea of budget would help.
You won't need bigger front rings, if anything you'll need smaller ones to get the same ratios as you had with 26" wheels.
Just a thought mate, but it could prove cheaper to sell the current bits you've got left over separately, and buy a whole new 29er bike.
Email me if you want some more info, but we've got a couple of Whyte's and Merida 29er's in right now in your size, that could be worth a try. Certainly the Merida's beat just about everything on VFM (barring maybe On One) and the Whyte's have probably got the most sorted geometry of the lot.
cheers for the proper replies..
Frame, looking at Kona Honzo or Genesis High Latitude (as I don't want a pure XC frame), the later seems to be in the lead... Yelli (gazed @ lovingly) would seemingly be spot on but at £750 frame only, it pushes the budget too far on a 1st step into 29er-hood. It'll be used for 'riding' but will have an unskilled biffer sat ontop.
Budget... as little as possible without skimping daftly, I'd prefer Hope Hoops (as per all my other bikes) but I'm not flush ATM, so if SSC work in exactly the same way and will last, SSC it is. IF need be I'll save more initally, over buying twice
Yet Reba's are no doubt more expensive than manitou/suntour/X fusion, but would be my first choice, unless I can be convinced otherwise (I know I know, this is contrary to the wheel sentence above).
Aware of the flatbar requirments but cheers for mentioning it anyways.
I'll assume the gears works then, that'll save a few pennies.
EDIT: Mark, yes there will be a clearout being performed,
1) to help finance this
2) to clear my garage of stuff
Obviously it's all theoretical, but I've looked into the whytes/on ones/et all, they scream XC to me, and I don't want XC handling.
PS: Don't suppose you talked your (LBS) boss into the Mason? (Looks lovely)
PS#2: The honzo and latitudes spec's as full bikes aren't "all that"
I'd go shimano based wheels and rockshox if it were me.
Isn't the HL available as a bike? £1K 1x10.
I've got 3x9 on one (11-34..22-32-44), and 3x10 on the other (11-36..24-32-42 (both 29ers) and both feel fine tbh, never feel under or over geared with either, run the nine speed til it's dead and then go ten speed...
Al, yeah and a m8 is awaiting one to arrive (with me in the back ground waiting to get a go straight away), but I'd rather buy one with bits that'd last... hmmm for short term cheapness and a speedier way to get the bike, it maybe the way ahead.... I find it very unreasonable though
Khani, I'll stay 9 speed as long as I can cheers...
Personal preference but I think the SSC wheels are bargains, true the bearings aren't as good as hopes but they're easily replace when needed.
Mine weigh within 18 gms of Hope Hoops specced the same (i.e. crest and dt spokes)

had rebas and manitou minute/tower. manitous are a better fork and cheaper.
interesting Jason
Keavo... words fail me.. doh! 😯
why? i've had 2 rebas, 1 tora (same damper as reba). took a punt on a reduced price minute a few years ago and found them to be a better performing fork. nicer damping, lighter, stiffer, cheaper and look better... imho. i now have 3 on my bikes, got the latest one a few weeks ago 100mm, 15mm q/r, tapered steerer £240 (reduced again). manitou, often overlooked and under rated.
What about some rigid forks to buy the nicer wheels and downgrade 😉 to suspension forks later down the line ?
Big thread on mtbr for the Tower forks as well, seem to be highly rated. I've got the Marz 44 Ti on my yelli which seems to be a reasonable fork if you can pick one of those up cheaply.
I did the same, moved all my kit over to a new 29er frame and bought new wheels and forks. It all works, dont worry about gearing, bars and all that, its not a big deal, change later if you must. Clee Cycles are doing Crest on Hope for £270 if thats in budget. I've always had Fox and DT forks, got a Reba RLT 15mm from Merlin for about £350, fantastic fork.
Do I need bigger bigger (front) rings, or will they work for now?
honzo is single ring only iirc.
Based on my own experience, I wouldn't recommend the Crest 29er rims if you're over about 85kg in weight, and going to be using the bike for roughish natural trail riding. If you're lighter and/or racing on them, they're good. If you are heavier or wanting a better balance between rim weight and stiffness, I can really recommend the Arch EX 29er's.
Chainring-wise, what people have said about going smaller is right. I was running 26/39 on my HT 29er (with 36t rear), which on a lightish bike is good for most trail riding. However, it lacks a 'bail out' option on longer or really steep climbs. On my short-travel FS 29er I have 24/38 (with 36t bottom gear out back) and, personally, I think it's the perfect combination for most UK trail riding.
HTH
Cant go far wrong with an Inbred 29er. Cheap, shouldnt lose you much money of you sell on. They ride well, given the price.
Components wise, Mavic TN319's on Deore Hubs make a reasonable wheelset. Theres usually a set of factory wheels up for grabs on here a couple of times a week, around the £70 mark, sometimes less.
Forks...I'd give rigids a go. They work a lot better on a 29er. Stick a big tyre on. THESE are a bargain, £10.87 for a 2.4" folding 29er tyre!!.
Pick up a 1x10 groupset & I reckon youd still be easily inside £500.
Keavo, it was only in jest, I like my Reba's in the 26er size & assume they'd be as good/reliable choice for a 29er. I am happy to hear your recommendation, especially as you've actually used both. Will factor that option into my plan.
To the others talking about rigids... No nopedy no, many thanks, love & kisses (Kona unit rigid I tried, felt just like a short travel fork but noooooo,)
Also No thanks to the On One, this is actually to replace an inbred (26er), I don't want an XC bike, just something a bit more fun (in my head anyway)
Ps. hadn't expected this to be resurrected, thanks for the extra suggestions 😀
Zippy,
I have a Honzo if you wanted to have a look at one. Nice bike but it's a heavy beast. Mine is obviously too big for you but it'll give you an idea of how they build up.
I built it up from scratch from a frame only and it's running 120mm Reba's.
Cheers Steve, may well take you up on the offer.
Surprised when Mboy said how much those frame weigh's, pity that you can't get the taro (ali) version (you'd imagine it being a lot lighter) in a frame only option (I asked).
Running my Spearfish with Manitou Tower experts w. 20mm axle, 34x 11-36 1x10 gears, SSC Crest wheels and really happy. Pretty sure CRC had some good deals on Towers.
9-speed is perfectly adequate, I use 2x9 on my 29er. RS Reba's are also great, I run the tapered variety 120mm with 20mm maxle-lite, they've been faultless so far. Hope Hoops with Crest Rims have also been fault free so far.
I've been running the Halo Freedom Disc 29er wheels. Take a hell of a beating and still running true.
Just ordered the On One new carbon fork. THIS ONE
