From the instructions tightening the lock nuts up on on side of the hub should be done up so there's "slightly more than no play"

Well. my MTB wheels have distinct movement at the tyre edge/top of the wheel with my hand - about 1mm - right or wrong?

When I've done mine I've always tightened the first nut by hand until it's just tight then do the next one. That's always seemed to work ok with no wobble (if that makes sense). why can't they just have hope type adaptors?!

I'm with Rob2, no wobble. I have wide lightnings and carbonators and have swapped axles and rebuilt several times. I hand tighten the inner nut until no play then tighten the outer nut against it. My wheels spin forever so I know this way works.

Have you got the little washer fitted between the free hub body and bearing?

The only way I got mine set up consistently was to do them while fitted in the bike which seems a bit odd but is the recommended method. Basically put the wheel in, tighten the QR/axle and adjust the preload with a cone spanner until you have no axial play at the rim. Just make sure you tighten the lock nut as well and then double check it off the bike to make sure it's not too tight.
