[#8328456]

Nothing going to be un-rideable or disastrously boggy on either (or both if I can blag two days riding) of these routes out of Ambleside.

Fancy testing my Etrex 30x I got at Christmas so these look decent enough routes, without straying too far from Ambleside where the family'll be.

Both good rides at this time of year. I had a lot of wet fun in Grizedale 10 days ago and only a short drive. Moor Top over to Parkamoor, down to the Lake. Back up and over the moor and then up Breasty Haw for fund descent. Back up and down to VC and then some fun on the black route. Good variety and not too exposed to the weather. I was REALLY filthy at the end though!!

I'm not sure how you get the GPXs off those pages to check them on an OS map but from what I can make out I'd say definitely no problems with the Louhrigg one, and almost certainly no problem with the other. Most of the trails around Ambleside, Loughrigg, Langdales etc work well all year round. Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

The loop is pretty easy to follow - might get a bit lost nr Hodge Close/Tilberthwaite but otherwise pretty straightforward. Two "surprisingly" nice climbs on that - maybe three?

I normally just do the shortish Loughrigg Loop which is one and a bit challenging climbs, so I'm trying to push myself a bit. I'm guessing the second bit on the 8 route is that descent that was "sanitised" recently.

I'm guessing the second bit on the 8 route is that descent that was "sanitised" recently.

Rode it last weekend. It's still decent, just not as good as it was. Plenty of rocks and roots above the sanitised section. Just watch out for the mantrap waterbar if you take the more direct, steeper route. Sure that wasn't there last time.

That fig 8 route is OK, but seems to be going in the 'wrong' direction on the Loughrigg fell bit. That descent will be very unsatisfying, as it is mainly on tarmac. Also seems almost perverse to go out as far as Low Wray and not include Claife and the Colthouse descent. ๐Ÿ˜€

I'll probably be out that way this weekend as well, but more on the Grizedale side of things.

I'll probably do the Loughrigg Loop one then. Less option for me to wimp out if it gets too wet.

The only change I'd make to that loop is not to turn right near to Hodge Close carry on to the farm at High Tilberthwaite, and take the track over to Fell Foot Farm at the bottom of Wrynose Pass. Much better descent(s) and a couple of challenging climbs, with interesting bedrock sections.

Well, that and miss out the drag up the A593 and up onto Oxen Fell, which I always hate! High Wray/Claife/Colthouse as above is much better, especially if you're looking to lengthen the ride a bit.

Cool, heading to Ambleside next weekend, might do some nice lower level stuff like the ideas above, as opposed to the usual monster hike a bike....

The ride was decent, harder than I thought and I pushed a couple of climbs (or bits of climbs) but I'm 120kg so that is to be expected. Some lovely descents on there, a couple on tarmac annoyingly,
I did have a panic as it got later but cheered up when I worked out where I was at the top of Loughrigg Terrace. I got back to the car at 1630 so had a bit of leeway. Annoyingly I'd forgotten my mega lumen Chinese torch in the boot of the car.
Once I'd worked out how to use my Etrex 30x it was ace. Ended up doing 26km and 760m vertical.

Riding out of Ambleside, we always end up over Garburn/Nan Bield direction, think I'll need to explore the Langdales/Grasmere common area this weekend.

Any recommendations? Easdale Tarn area looks worth a blast...

Easedale Tarn is very popular with walkers so a weekend might not be the best.

True, I'm more used to riding the North Lakes, apart from the likes of Cat bells, it's not really a consideration most of the time...

The BW up to Easedale Tarn isnt much fun IMO. Very very stop start with a lot of thrutching. The one through Easedale isnt much better to be honest. Bit like the BW up Langstrath.

Nobeer... you could try this :- Strava

The descent from Lingmoor to Little Langdale is a gem, as is the up and over Hole Rake, dropping into Coppermines is a brilliant techy path.

Footpaths though, so you haven't heard it from me.

No worries. Let me know if you want the GPX. You could also make it a bit further by parking in Ambleside and adding the Loughrigg loop into it. I started at Elterwater.

The GPX would be ace mate, as IIRC there's bridleways and paths going all ways around that area, email in profile - much appreciated.

Edit - I've requested to follow you, if you okay that I can grab the GPX from there (and all your other best Lakes stuff ๐Ÿ™‚

Mate is staying in a B&B in Ambleside, so we'll ride out from there (I'll find a suitably cheeky place to kip in the van...)
