The reason the World Champs have more cache than the World Cup Series is mostly down to the fact that no one is riding cautiously. Unless the World Cup is down to the wire and a few DH'ers NEED to win as opposed to just enough points from a 2nd lace or a 3rd place, a lot of World Cup races will have some riders riding cautiously in order not to risk too much.

During the World Champs, and at least in years gone past, most riders would completely do away with any body armour, protection, or shin pads to save weight for the sake of gaining a few tenths. They pretty much launch themselves off the mountain with little consideration for their health or safety all for the purpose of winning one race as opposed to tactically holding back a tad. Thats why you often see some riders saying they rode a World Cup race at 90% or 80% to save themselves for the next few rounds.

"Who is this Danny Hart fella anyways? He's awesome."

Go on freecaster and look up the Fort William World Cup event - watch the last 10 riders. Danny did not win, but was the most exciting rider by miles.

WOW!! 😯

Watched it a few times, unbelievable skills combined with OTT showboating, only a super confident young rider like Danny could pull that off.

AMAZING!

I guess it's kinda FA Cup V League title, that's how I look at it anyway. One race where they go all out to win, not thinking about the season or preserving anything (e.g. Health!)

You're racing for your country (and yourself, of course), nothing really to do with your bike teams/sponsors even tho you'll ride your normal sponsor bike, it's teamGB, so more like a World Cup Final IMO.

Incredible riding, hard to get your head round really. I'm normally quite a fan of the Freecaster commentary, but I thought they could have briefly stopped shouting at some point in the run, if only to raise it back up again at the end. 🙂

The BBC posted a footnote, yay - BBC

CYCLING - MOUNTAIN BIKE
Jaroslav Kulhavy of the Czech Republic and Canada's Catharine Pendrel won the cross-country races at the Mountain Bike World Championships in Champery, Switzerland.

World mountain bike champion Catharine Pendrel of Canada
Kulhavy clinched gold ahead of former world champion Nino Schurter of Switzerland and Olympic champion Julien Absalon of France.

Pendrel, victorious at the recent London 2012 test event, won the five-lap women's race ahead of Poland's Maja Wloszczowska, the Olympic silver medalist.

There was a surprise success for Great Britain in the non-Olympic downhill event, with Danny Hart winning the gold.

That looked fast, but since I don't normally watch Downhill* I've nothing to compare it to. I thought winning margins were usually in the 1-2 second range, which certainly makes that a fantastic achievement.

* on account of it being a bit boring.**

** yes - I do ride a mountain bike.

you do get those big margins sometimes, especially when the course is either super-tech or a mudfest as people make mistakes and lose time because it's harder to get your speed back up/ maintain your momentum.
apart from a little slide, Danny didn't make any mistakes that I saw.
.
nice to see someone from the North East (Redcar) smashing it, shame he won't get the media coverage he deserves, which is surprising given the popularity of cycling

Absolutely amazing to watch that (even if I knew he won, and had heard about the 'whip'). I was stuck without access to Freecaster yesterday, so had to make do with catching up just by seeing the results on the MTB Worlds website.

Just speechless watching that run, especially after watching Warner's quality pre-race headcam footage that showed how nuts that course is.

Brilliant, just brilliant and I'd guess a massive boost to other young GB riders, seeing someone only a couple of years into Seniors winning the World Champs and doing pretty well at the Cup too.

Danny looked like he was on his local run, having a blast.

Because Hamsterley is that wet 11 months of the year.

Schwalbe can put a little rainbow stripe on there now.

And charge another tenner.

Outstanding result, done in style, motowhipped and sensible haircut style.

What if Peaty had won his stripes at such a young age?

But for 99.999% of cyclists, that performance is absolutely nothing to do with what they do.

"apart from a little slide"

Was that a mistake, or was he cutting the corner to avoid the outside line?

Intentional line, probably didn't intend to slide it like that but he was miles faster through there than the competition, the wider line was safer but slower. (and I think is where Gwin ended up crashing out, while trying to make the more ridden line faster)

Who is this Danny Hart fella anyways? He's awesome.

Danny is a downhiller who has been racking up some serious race wins for some time now - check out his Juvenille and Youth race history - undefeated in NPS and SDA 2007!

http://www.rootsandrain.com/rider795/danny-hart/results/

Amazing performance. He's a nice guy and not too shabby on an MX bike either!
Still, he's come a long way from winning SDAs to winning the World Champs. I'm still buzzing, can't imagine how he feels. Nice one Danny.

Truly incredible run. GB also won the team, with Brendan fairclough in 4th and Marc Beaumont in 6th. And that was without GA, who crashed, and Peaty etc
