So im going to venture into the world of "proper" footwear and I'm looking for a bit of feedback from other peopes real world expierience.
I ride flats, always have always will, 5:10's just don't appeal to me and as far as I can tell that leaves me with two choices. As above, shimanos AM41 or the teva links, I'm thinking something with a stiffer sole than my age old vans, a bit grippier, comfy for all day riding and something to keep my feet as dry and warm as possible through the winter without being too sweaty. So which out of my two options (unless there is something I haven't seen) would tick the most boxes?
I've had, and still have a pair of both. Tevas all the way! They're grippier, better looking, dry quicker and comfier. The soles are plenty stiff enough too, but not too stiff. I've moved to clips now and even though the Tevas are looking pretty battered I still wear them as everyday shoes because they're so comfy.
I'd go option 3- 5 10 Freeriders and a bottle of Grainger's shoe waterproofer.
Getonyourbke, how "waterproof" are the tevas? Does water from puddle splashes etc still come in under the laces?
Northwind, i definately like the look of the new 5:10 freeriders but was thinking of them as more of a summer shoe, how good is the graingers stuff, how often do you need to re-apply?.
They aren't. But the water comes out as quick as it does in...
Links aren't that waterproof.
But comfy as hell, been living in mine since I got em 4 months ago (only ridden in them 4 times ethough) use Wellgo v12 and the sole isn't quite as grippy as my shimano Mp56 but feel better riding in the tevas
The Graingers stuff basically stops them from being horrible sponges, which 5 10s otherwise are... But it doesn't make them fully waterproof. (course, you can also nuke a pair of AM41s with a waterproofer too, but the Freerider is IMO a better shoe in the first place)
It puts them in the game, at least- Five Tens as standard are all diabolical in winter otherwise. I can't compare with the Tevas but the AM41 isn't the best shoe out there I reckon, it's a bit of a step back from the AM40.
My old AM40s are now my commuter/work shoes, Links are my proper riding shoes. Links are warmer but less sweaty, comfier (narrower heel and broader forefoot which suits the typical British foot better and upper padding v nice), sole is harder wearing but similarly grippy, similarly good balance of sole cushioning and stiffness, less waterproof (it gets through above the toes, not the tongue as you might assume) but don't hold much water so stay warm when wet and dry out fast. And I've found the lack of cunning lace flap makes them less annoying to take off when muddy, bizarrely!
links here too.
wear em on the bike, wipe em down with a sponge/cloth and wear em down the pub even when damp/wet.
comfier than my slippers............. ๐
I've just bought the AM41's and am liking them after a few rides. The sole is nice and stiff which is what I wanted and they offer decent grip even on my off road commuter fitted with the dirt cheap Welgo flat pedals that came with my Boardman. They haven't got wet yet but they certainly can't be worse for soaking up water than the old Specialized shoes they replaced. I'll be using them with sealskinz for the winter.
The support and the covered laces are why I like my AM41s, that and they come in a size that fit my feet. That's probably the real reason I like them.
I bought Teva Links back in the "summer". They are comfy, in as much as they fit me really well. The pedal / shoe interface is really good.
The jury is out on waterproofness and I'm not convinced they will be very warm in the wet in winter. If 5.10 s are notorious for taking an age to dry then they must be really bad. Links do hold water and don't dry that fast. They let water in through the tongue / laces. All this is noticeable for me as my regular riding does often involve some unloftable stream crossings and wet trails.
My old, tried and tested Merrell approach shoes really did keep a lot of water out, although the more by chance than deliberate design, pedal-suited sole has worn badly and they leak a tiny bit, they will almost certainly still be much warmer and drier in winter.
Links : Very comfy ,confidence inspiring grip, stiff-soled and really suited to my Gusset SlimJim pedals. That could be all !
2 pairs bmx shoes and waterproff socks for me
