I've shown interest in about 4 sets of brakes in the for sale section in the past few days, and not got a reply from any of them
Thats another thing. If its sold at least reply a one-line courtesy 'sorry sold'.
On pinkbike there is a function to mark the item as sold yet you still get mongs emailing you 'hello m8 still for sale'?
I got silly low offers on a jacket I was selling. I didn't sell it.
I've also seen people offering things for more than I'd be willing to pay. I didn't buy it.
I've seen stuff that I wanted for a price that I thought was fair. I bought it.
This kind of thing is self correcting, surely?
This kind of thing is self correcting, surely?
You'd think so.
With second hand stuff (ebay forums or whatever) you have to accept you win some and you lose some. I have just got a Saris rack on ebay which is a little more used than id like but I saved myself £60 on a new one and it will do the job, this goes down as a disappointment. I have also just bought some Fullride pedals for £12 posted – they are as new and a brilliant bargain.
I don’t get why you would use a forum when you get a level of security with flebay and the price is effectively the market rate.
If its too much just don’t bother, let people waste their time.
I’d just make what I consider a reasonable offer, if it’s rejected then that’s an end to it no point bleating to the rest of us…
There’s always eBay or other forums have classified ads too, STW is not the only place you can shop for slightly used On-ones
At the end of the day, most on here are technically adept to build/upgrade their own bikes so usually only want the odd part.
That made me giggle, most of the forks on sale on STW are there because their present owner is too Lazy or Stupid to change a seal or some oil… Or there’s a new toy on the market…
“…technically adept…” 😆 (Wipes away tear) Mercy...
fleabay often is well over the market rate - eg the well used brakes I sold on there for more than I could buy them new for...

Maybe the 'market rate' is what people are prepared to pay 'cos they don't bother googling the item listed on ebay to see what it's on offer for elsewhere. I've seen bids on bike components go way beyond the price you could pay for them new if you shopped around.
I don't bother bidding for much on fleabay these days 'cos it's a waste of my time following an item if people are going to outbid you and are prepared to pay way above a reasonable price. I only buy stuff that has an acceptable 'buynow' price.
You might be taking a small risk on the STW classifieds but I've always got bargains and, so far, have had no trouble. 🙂
I've been trying to shift a fair amount on the classifieds recently, been using STW rather than ebay mainly because I don't particularly want to line ebay & paypal's pockets and it's nice to sell to other people who I know are into bikes.
I do get a bit annoyed with the requests for photos when I've linked a flickr account with 25 or so pictures of everything. Often I'm at work so can't email pictures and often don't get the time to fire up the home laptop with the pictures on due to family.
It is definitely more hassle selling on the classifieds as opposed to ebay, but at least you get the price you are asking for.
Thankyou for those who;ve bought of me recently - you've paid for my nice shiny RS Reverb 🙂
Thats another thing. If its sold at least reply a one-line courtesy 'sorry sold'.
You are FAMOUS for expressing interest in items for sale and then not emailing the sellers out of courtesy when you change your mind.
Perhaps they're just giving you a taste of your own medicine?
If you don't like the price, don't buy it 😉
And back on topic: I agree more people seem to be chancing it with high prices lately.
But do people think I'm losing the plot with what I'm asking for my Zesty here?
Genuinely interested because sometimes I think sellers are too greedy, but other times I think buyers are ridiculously tight.
Can both be true? Probably, yes.
If Ebay prices are way over the market, why bother selling with classifieds and forums. There is a market in all these things and ebay offers a service and there is a price for it but they also offer a huge customer base that gives you the best possible chance of a sale.
You can get some crazy people buying at over shop prices but that is great news for the seller.

If you don't like the price, HAGGLE!
It annoys the wotsit out of me when sellers get offended by low offers, similarly, I'll try my luck with a high price when selling knowing full well I'll drop it happily if someone offers.
Chaka that is a very nice bike however framewise I'd have 600 in my head if I was looking at buying such a (nice) frame.
Wow
Didn't expect this response.
Am not winging about it, I just feel some people are over pricing there items, and time and time again you see the same people putting the same item on again and again.
I would rather get a bit less money for my item than re-list it time and time again.

Had a look at your ad. I think your price is definitiely a bargain but second hand complete bikes sell for stupidly low prices! Its hard to split a bike like that too as a lot of stuff might be hard to shift or not worth much on its own. Ive got a spicy 316 thats even more upgraded (not bragging, just is lol) and a bit newer but I know that I wouldnt be able to ask any more than you are because people just dont want to pay that much for a 2nd hand bike.
I thought lapierre frames might fetch a good price 2nd hand as you can only buy them as complete bikes but I could be wrong. I wonder if there is an element of 'its only the 214' snobbery, despite the frames being exactly the same as the higher (non carbon) models?
I just googled a zesty 214 and the same bike (i think) new can be had for £1,400. £50 more than your second hand.

hora, thomson stems are £45 new if you know where to look (probikeshop.fr and use their discount code), despite that there are a few on classifieds for £45-50.
Bargains get snapped up in seconds, I agree that posters should learn how to post pics, its not difficult and ultimately saves them hassle rather than emailing out half a dozen sets.
My only gripe about overpriced kit is how often it gets reposted, with little or no price drop, cluttering up and pushing other ads off the page.
but with cheaper parts, including a significant fork upgrade

It's not even close to the same level of spec though.
Almost every component on Chakapings bike is upgraded, including the forks and shock (i.e. expensive bits!)
I'm riding those though, the for sale stuff is in storage, thanks for noticing though
No, no. Thank you for taking the time out from riding to reply.
quite agree with the OP and generally laugh at FS posts along the lines of this...
'hardly used XTR pedals - i've bought them for £80, and noticed that they can be advertised for £120 therefore i'm giving them away for £85'
**** right off
I had a strange experience earlier this year. I was looking at buying a hardtail; negotiated a price, payment method, post etc.
I was just going to transfer the money when he comes back and says he'll post it in 8 weeks, when his new bike arrives. No, you won't. If I pay for it, it's mine. You're not riding it after that point.
It seems I was in the wrong by his response, so I left it.
I agreed to buy a shifter etc. Then I received an email 'chq is fine but you understand I wont post the shifter until the chq is cleared'.
I'm not 12yrs old who has just joined the forum. In addition its illegal to present a chq with insufficient funds isnt it?
The only thing that I can think of is the seller has been stung by a scammer in the past.
Still it put my nose out.
illegal to present a chq with insufficient funds isnt it?
Do you mean to write a cheque, or is the offence with the person trying to cash it?
He was right not to post, it was a reasonable caveat.
i wouldn't post something until the cheque had cleared. i don't think i know anyone who would.
I post on receipt. Theres a basic level of trust unless of course we are talking a frame, expensive forks or bike.
What have you got to fear? A regular on the forum might make £30 out of you? Scary world folks.

+1 on 3 Joplin posts. No replies at all so don't know if sold or not. Bought one on ebay - need a better system here to save frustrated buyers and maximise returns for sellers. I've bought and sold a fair bit on here but could be better for all the reasons already mentioned.
Hora,
OEM 454 pikes had steel steerers. So yours could be the real deal.
Hora, in one sentence you assert that you are not naive; in the next you demonstrate almost absolute naivety. You are genuinely fascinating.
i have to trust you because you're a regular on a forum? not a chance.
if we've met and i thought you were a dissent fella than i might, but probably not.
trust no one!
pastcaring I'll flip this round. Yet you expect someone to pay a forum member blind for items not seen 'in person' first? I think the buyer has to show alot more trust than yourself.
Naive? Confused more like- my point is hardly the crime of the century 'ooo I got 30quids worth of used bicycle kit on some chump'
?? 😆
'ooo I got 30quids worth of used bicycle kit on some chump'
works out quite lucrative with the number of trusting 'chumps' about....
Naive? Confused more like...
It's the naivety that causes the confusion.
Oh, and most people would prefer not to lose £300.

There was a certain bike-riding sheep not so long back, after all.....

too my two 2 fans Jamie and Ralph, you do know i'm straight? so while there's no chance with me maybe you two should get a room together for some mutual admiration of me seeing as you follow my posts so carefully?
😛
p.s. only two rides today, will try harder tomorrow
you do know i'm straight?
You do know I couldn't give a ****?
Anyways.
I was merely pointing out that saying you had no time to throw up a few pics for an ad, when all you do is throw up pics of everything else was a bit of an odd thing to say.
Meh. World keeps spinning.
....oh and Ralph. How you doooing? 8)
Thomson Stem new £55 posted.I did buy an immaculate used one for £37 and had it in a couple of days!
Winning.
Don't make me open a can of woop-ass on you guys 😀
I have also done 2 rides today, one to work and the t'other back, and I'm pretty chuffed to find out how superior that makes me! 🙂
Go away jamie you are nowt to me - RD is the apple of my (japs) eye
A saving over new is...well....a saving.
By cheap and sell cheap is the mantra I tend to stick to. Have to wait for bits to come up when I need then but then they shift on fairly quickly when I get rid of them.
Although I havent sold much recently, just built it into another bike instead.
the madness continues... set of hope hoops lightly used being sold for 300 quid. a google search can find you a new pair for less, easy peasy.
The Versa STIs for 11 speed Alfine made me chuckle. £60 more than a new set.
