What's with the "more than one bike would cost too much to maintain" posts?

I didn't know my bikes wore out when they were sat in the garage...

In fact one of the reasons I have more than one bike is so I can ride winter and commute SS so save on drivetrain costs!

"cost more in maintenance and you can only ride 1 bike at a time...so why have more?"

With two bikes you ride each half the time. So the net wear is the same as having one bike.

Two bikes gives you a choice of styles, and also a spare when one is broken.

I've only got one, more would be nice but cant really justify it at the moment! Most people on here seem to have far too much money!

Nope, just choose to spend it on bikes and not much else (thank god for understanding girlfriends with expensive hillwalking habits, they understand...).

I've got a singlespeed cross bike, a racer and a singlespeed rigid MTB. Basically I was getting sick of being mugged by component manufacturers so gradually regressed to cheap/simple bikes.

However I'm already missing having a bike for scrabbling up highland singletrack and looning down the other side, cue a 'big' MTB, and I would also like something a little more forgiving than the racer that I can pull a trailer around Scotland's coast with for 3 weeks, cue a nice tourer. 😀

If you're happy with just one bike (I was...) then be bloody careful you don't try a different style of bike, it will reveal (brutally) what your existing bike is good at, and more importantly, what it is bad at.

Whoever it was up there ^ who thinks a 150mm full suss is all they need obviously hasn't taken a good road bike out for 100 miles on steep twisty scenic roads.*

*awaits tales of beasting professional roadies up Ventoux on their freeride bike etc etc 😉

Up to 10 myself and my GF has 4....

Admittedly some of them don't see a lot of use.

If you only use a bike for one thing then yes, I see no point in having more than one bike. If I only rode xc and lived next door to the supermarket in the middle of town then I can't imagine the need for another bike.

But if you want to ride downhill and "freeride" at full tilt and then ride the local bridepaths and then the local skatepark and then have something cheap and quick on the road to get around town then you end up in my situation with 1 bike for each application 🙁
My first bike was at attempt at something that could do everything and it didn't last long on dh tracks.

If all of us only had 1 bike, the "industry" would have folded long ago.

I to only have 1(ish) bike(s)

1 hardtail geared mtb - for general riding and fun
1 rigid s/s 69er mtb - to satify the niche whore in me
1 boardman roadbike - because believe it or not its actually good fun
and
1 fixie langster - for riding to the coffee bars whilst wearing my sisters jeans (not that i have a sister)

Each one serves a purpose, and boardman aside (which was C2W) fairly low cost all in, Kona Unit which is the s/s frame was £15 and other parts were lying around or bought second hand, as for maintenance of them, doesnt cost anymore, and if i one does get broke them i dont have to rush to get parts to fix it, i can use another whilst i am repairing the broken one
