[Closed] Alternatives to an Orange 5?

Looks like I might be selling my ASR-7 as I'm just not using it as much as I should be. Having had a test ride on a 5, I'm really tempted by one with the only sticking point being £1400 for the frame (+ a bit more as I'd want a custom colour and shock upgrade). Its not that I mind spending that much on a frame but it does seem a bit dear for what it is.

I'll be building it up with my own kit so looking at frame only, needs to have a 30.9 seat tube for a dropper post but other than that I'm open to suggestion. Any ideas?

Look at the Santa Cruz Heckler. Single pivot, 30.9 seat tube and way cheaper than a 5 frame.

Two santa cruz models might be worth a look- the heckler or if you fancy a multi pivot bike the Butcher. Both have 30.9 seat tubes and come under the price of a orange 5 (£899 and £1350). Both have 150mm travel so might be a bit more than what your after but they may be something to consider.
Edit-Beaten to it. God I'm slow at typing

You could check out the new yeti sb66. If you've got a friend in the usa you could get one for less than 2200 with full build including kashima front and rear!

Mafiafish - interested, where's that from.

Heckler is a good suggestion as is the butcher. Just looking at specs, does the Heckler really come with a 30.9 seat tube? I had a look at the butcher and like the idea of a slacker head angle - the Heckler is 68/69 non?

Specialized make bikes with a 30.9 seat tube, they must have something that fits the bill

+ 2 on a Heckler if you're unsure get one SH and sell for a minimal loss if you're not keen.

Unless they've changed it recently, yes. A mate got one in '07 that takes a 30.9mm seat post and my '08 Chameleon does too. As far as I know all Santa Cruz frames use 30.9mm seat posts and the only change to the Heckler since '07 is to do with the pivot, not the seat tube.

Despite the extra 10mm of travel to the 5 the Heckler is a pretty similar sort of bike. I've seen plenty built up with Pikes and other 140mm travel forks, as well as others built up burlier with longer travel forks.

Fives can do lots of jobs, what sort of thing do you want this bike to do? If you're looking at the gnar-er-er end of the scale then maybe a Nukeproof Mega, only £900.

Jenson usa, lots of other ridiculously cheap bikes/ frames on there too. They deliver to the UK (free at the moment!) but I think they're not allowed to send Yetis directly here (but I could be wrong).

Canyon Strive?

Their Torque model looks good as well, but I suppose it's more comparable with the Alpine 160

+1 heckler, great little bike. Just remember to check out the size guides, and be prepared to go up one size than you usually ride (i.e. if you were after a 18" (medium) 5, you'll want a large heckler).

Try and get an ex demo five I just managed to get one for 1700 from alpine bikes you can then sell the components and send frame to orange for your custom paint job. That should save you loads.

A Mega is quite tempting, for £900 + a set of lyrics and the kit off my yeti I could have a pretty nice bike. My only concern is that they only do a medium and being 6ft1 I might be a bit on the big side for using it as an all day bike?

I also really like the idea of a Heckler - I'm assuming it could take an angleset to slacken the head angle a bit?

With the Heckler? No. 1-1/8th steerer tube.

The Heckler is pretty 'old school' in it's geometry. Steep head angle, short wheelbase & long top tube.

Think of the things you want out of a frame, do you want a low, slack & long bike like the 5, or would you prefer something a bit shorter & upright like the Heckler?

The price (surely to a certain degree?) has to be irrelevant if the Heckler is completely the wrong bike for you...

Hob Nob - yep, totally agree. Bike will be used for pretty much everything, alps trips, bit of downhill, trail centres, enduro's. It'll get quite a bit of stick so needs to be fairly strong. I think to be honest the only frame thats really going to do the job is a 5, best I start looking in the 'For Sale' forum....

Practically every quality 5-6 inch frame will be up for that.

Transition Bandit? £1,400. I'm considering changing my 2005 Heckler for one of these, lighter than a Butcher with 68 degree head angle, tapered steerer etc. I've got the 7 year ish itch I think.

In the green obviously

There were loads of Orange 5s at Eastridge but also a huge number of riders on Yetis too....i believe the sponsored Leisure Lakes guys were all on Yetis...seemed very capable bikes.

Put a decent rider on any of the bikes mentioned in this thread and they'd be quick.

Heckler rides nothing like a Five at all. There are alternatives but I doubt any will ride the same. If you like the Five just buy it, you won't regret it.

I'm in a similar situation as I'm looking for a new frame/bike to replace my '07 Five. I'd like one that incorporates some of the latest standards like tapered headtube, 30.9 seat post for dropper post, maxle back end and if possible direct mount front derailleur (although less important).

Considering a few bikes like Foxy RR, Mojo HD 140 & Zesty but I still keep on coming back to the Five that ticks all of the boxes. Think I'll wait to see what the new year brings.

Mondraker Foxy comes as frame only for about £1300. Looks like Specialized are doing the Stumpy EVO as a frame only for 2012 if you can wait a little while. Their frame only prices are always pretty good value too.

The Foxy has a similar feel to the Five, I think, being long low and fairly slack.

Has a 31.6mm seat tube though.
